(AP) ? Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann won a test vote of Iowans on Saturday, a show of popularity and organizational strength for the tea party favorite five months before the state's caucuses kick off the GOP presidential nominating season.

The result is the first indication of what Iowans think of the field of Republicans competing for the chance to challenge President Barack Obama next fall. But it's hardly predictive of who will win the winter Iowa contest, much less the party nod or the White House.

Rather, Saturday's outcome suggests that Bachmann has a certain level of support and, perhaps even more important, the strongest get-out-the-vote operation and widest volunteer base in a state whose caucuses require those elements.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul finished a close second while former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty placed a distant third.

"We have a lot more work to do," Pawlenty said, making clear he wasn't dropping out despite a disappointing finish. "We are just beginning and I'm looking forward to a great campaign."

The results of the nonbinding vote, held on the Iowa State University campus, came just hours after Texas Gov. Rick Perry entered the race.

"I full well believe I'm going to win," Perry told South Carolina voters on a conference call before delivering his first speech as a candidate.

"It's time to get America working again," he declared in Charleston, S.C. "America is not broken. Washington, D.C. is broken."

Despite Perry's best efforts to overshadow the day, the epicenter of the presidential contest was in this Midwestern town, where nearly 17,000 Iowans cast ballots during a daylong political festival, a late-summer ritual held every four years.

In speeches throughout the day, candidates scouted for support by assailing Obama and offering themselves as the answer to an America plagued by high unemployment, rising debt and stock market swings.

"We know what America needs. But unfortunately Barack Obama has no clue. He's like a manure spreader in a windstorm," Pawlenty said, adding: "Mr. President, get the government off our backs." That elicited chants of his nickname: "T-Paw! T-Paw! T-Paw!"

Pawlenty had a lot on the line. He's ranked low in polls and was looking to prove he was still a viable candidate. He argued that he was the candidate of results, given his record as Minnesota governor.

Bachmann stressed faith and her Iowa roots ? she was born in Waterloo ? as well as her opposition to abortion rights and gay marriage. She earned cheers when she declared: "We are going to make Barack Obama a one-term president."

Bachmann, riding high since entering the race earlier this summer, had hoped that a strong finish would give her even more momentum just as Perry looks to infringe on her base of tea party and evangelical support. She invoked God and faith as she stressed what she called her conservative values, saying: "In Iowa, we are social conservatives and we will never be ashamed of being social conservatives."

Paul, with a following among libertarian-leaning voters, wanted a surprise showing that might convince Republicans he was more mainstream than not in his second shot at the GOP nomination. He referenced his fellow Texan's entrance in the race and said he didn't anticipate many of his supporters jumping ship for what he called a "super-establishment candidate."

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, businessman Herman Cain and former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia also were on the ballot. So were GOP front-runner Mitt Romney and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, though they weren't competing in the contest.

Perry and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who made a splash Friday when she visited the state fair, weren't listed. But their backers planned write-in campaigns that could outpace candidates who have spent months trying to line up supporters to participate.

The straw poll isn't a scientific poll at all; it amounts to a popularity contest and a test of organizational strength.

Poor showings usually force some candidates, mostly those who are not well-known and are struggling to raise money, to abandon their bids. That could happen this year, too.

The straw poll has a mixed record of predicting the outcome of the precinct caucuses.

In 2008, Romney won the straw poll, but the big news was the surprising second-place showing of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. Huckabee won the Iowa caucuses, but dropped from the race soon after. Sen. John McCain, who eventually won the nomination, didn't compete in the straw poll and finished in 10th place.

More Traffic Is NOT a Panacea | Lawyers Get Social

Many companies that provide websites for lawyers don?t understand the business of law and therefore propagate bad advice. ?For example, this post on Larry Bodine?s popular Law Marketing Blog from Ryan Nelson who works at Legal Web Experts. ?His first point is ?Generate Traffic by Any Means Necessary.? Here is how that can be wrong:

Your practice handles mostly corporate legal issues: you don?t want everyone who has a noisy neighbor or wants to incorporate their moneyless nonprofit to query you for legal services that pays very little.

You already have a strong referral based practice where you have to do little to manage incoming work: in this case, why would you want to flood your inbox with lots queries for legal matters that you have to sort through, answer and reject?

You handle defense-side employment matters: why would you want to see emails from terminated employees wanting to sue their former employer?

Yes, there are situations where lawyers with certain kinds of practice should follow Ryan?s advice but what non-legal SEO and website professionals don?t understand is that there isn?t one legal market there are many legal markets and understanding that reality is critical to properly serving attorney clients with Internet advice.

Security forces combat Airmen benefit from rodeo experience ...

Senior Airman Jeffrey Kristek, 647th Security Forces Squadron, low-crawls under barbed wire during the 2011 Air Mobility Rodeo at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. on July 28. Kristek is stationed at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Carolyn Herrick

Joint Base Pearl HarborHickam Public Affairs

JOINT BASE LEWISMCCHORD, WASH. -Four Airmen from the 647th Security Forces Squadron (SFS) at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam competed against international air forces during the 2011 Air Mobility Rodeo July 24 to 29.

Twenty-six countries and international agencies attended and competed in the rodeo, hosted by Air Mobility Command.

?We competed in the combat weapons event, combat tactics event, and combat endurance event,? said Tech. Sgt. Michael Skonetski, the 647th SFS team leader. ?(Senior Airman Chris) Menefee and I also competed in the advanced marksman competition.?

Although the joint base security forces unit did not come home with any firstplace awards, they competed very well in the events, Skonetski said.

?After each event we each felt pretty good. It was a great course for us to go through to refresh our skills and become better for when we do get tasked,? he said.

They will be able to implement those skills when they are deployed, and they learned some good tactics, techniques and procedures to bring back to the unit, according to the eight-year NCO.

?When we were doing our ?lessons learned? with instructors and other teams, we learned from them and they learned from us, too,? he said.

?I think what we did here is related to what the security forces role or job is to do, real world,? said Tech. Sgt. Pablo Gonzalez, 647th SFS assistant Bravo flight chief.

?These were realistic missions that we might be tasked to do in the future,?

Gonzalez said. ?It very well might make a difference. It might make the difference between surviving and not surviving.?

In combat tactics, for instance, they did small convoys, during which their job was to protect the U.S. aid workers and bring everyone back in one piece, including their own team members.

?It was fantastic, very realistic,? said Gonzalez, who has been in the Air Force for 12 years. ?We had a good time.?

Menefee, a 647th SFS fire team member, said the hardest part of the rodeo was the anticipation of the events.

?Each event was timed, and you could only be at the event during a certain time frame,? Menefee said. ?You couldn?t be there too early or too late.?

They also didn?t exactly know what each event would entail, because the operational orders were purposefully vague, and they didn?t know what they were going to see or face in the scenario.

?This was the first time I?ve gone to an event where you don?t have any training first, no instruction. You just go perform, then you get critiqued,? Menefee said. ?It?s not about training. It?s just, ?here?s the benchmark,? and then you see where you stand in your career field.?

The scenarios were very realistic to what they would typically see in the Air Force, he said. For a typical deployment, they are put on a four-to-12-man team, and then deploy with other Airmen from other units.

Then they are expected to work together seamlessly for six months.

?That?s what makes us different from other services,? Menefee said. ?It emulates deployment as closely as possible.?

?Everybody throughout their career has different experiences and different ways of doing things,? said Senior Airman Jeff Kristek, 647th

SFS armorer. ?Combining those and working with others, you learn better ways of doing things. Getting critiqued by the cadre was beneficial because they told us about scenarios they faced while deployed and the things they do. It was fun. I had a good time,? said Kristek.

?It?s crazy to see that people from within your unit four rogue defenders you put together with different job titles, in for different amounts of time, with different training can come together as a team, perform and still feel good about (them)selves after an event,? Skonetski said. ?If we went on a tasking right now as a team, we wouldn?t have any issues completing the mission.?

Engagement On The Go with David Zinger of the Employee Engagement ...

I love to write. I love public speaking. Call me crazy, right? We know that many people avoid both of these activities like the plague. One of the reasons I enjoy these is because I am totally engaged when I am performing them. Each demands my total attention. Each is interactive and iterative, moving toward, but never achieving, perfection. Each results in a product that, usually, sends some positive feedback my way. Each requires a skill which, as it improves, causes me to feel a certain amount of pride in my work. Each makes a difference. Each is something that I find inherently enjoyable ? the pleasure is in the doing, not just in the reward.

In short, writing and public speaking are the kinds of activities which, for me, are what I think people are referring to when they talk about employee engagement. For others, fixing cars, computer programming, or keeping track of accounts payable result in similar ?engagement?, though neither of these three would for me. Each of us is the same in what motivates us and each of us is different. Great leaders know what both of those are for their followers, and therefore what it takes to create motivating work environments for each unique set of workers.

I was recently interviewed by David Zinger of the Employee Engagement Network. He called it Employee Engagement on the Go: Managing the Mobile Workforce. It was a pleasure talking with him and I felt him to be a kindred spirit. I was honored he?d ask me to come talk with him about our book,?Managing the Mobile Workforce. ?He seems like a genuinely caring person who is making a positive difference.

I am not an expert on ?engagement? per se, so it was fun to upgrade my knowledge of ?engagement? abit. That included reading some scholarly papers, in particular a couple by Brad Shuck, who has done a great job of synthesizing what the academic world is saying about engagement. ?McGraw-Hill has a book out called Re-Engage: How America?s Best Places to Work Inspire Extra Effort in Extraordinary Times, by Branham and Hirschfeld. This was a good one since I?m always interested in what we can learn from what the ?best places to work? practice. Also, David Zinger himself has a huge amount of information (groups, discussion, feeds, blogs, videos, and more) on the Employee Engagement Network website.

The result ? I had a great time during the 45 minute webinar and we covered a lot of territory. It produced a very highly downloaded video, which must have struck a chord with folks thinking about the juxtaposition of engagement and the mobile workforce. I hope you?ll check it out if you have time and interest.
