Anna Hazare to launch public fast as government relents (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? India's beleaguered government caved in to popular fury over corruption on Thursday after thousands protested across the country, granting permission for a self-styled Gandhian crusader to stage a 15-day hunger strike in public.

Anna Hazare was arrested on Tuesday, hours ahead of a planned fast to demand tougher laws against the graft that plagues Indian society from top to bottom.

But the jailing of the 74-year-old campaigner sparked nationwide protests and put Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government on a backfoot, forcing it to relent.

"We are India's youth. We are with Anna. I've already seen corruption at this age," said 21 year-old Sweta Dua outside the jail. "In my college people got admitted despite being unable to clear the required cut-off scores, simply by paying money."

The Congress party-led government, facing one of the most serious protest movements since the 1970s, at first agreed to release Hazare, but he refused to leave the high-security Tihar jail until he won the right to lead an anti-corruption protest.

Crowds by the jail erupted in joy after a deal was struck to allow Hazare to fast in public, reached early on Thursday, shouting "I am Anna" and "We are with you." An impromptu stage was set up with musicians playing for the crowds.

Hazare has postponed his public fast until Friday because the Ramlila Maidan grounds in central Delhi are not ready to host massive crowds. Ahead of his appearance, Hazare's team released a video message of him in jail on youtube.com

"My health is fine, do not worry. Instead, I am full of energy now," said Hazare, sitting on the floor in a white washed room, to a shaky camera.

"I will stay in jail tonight, and tomorrow I will come to meet you all," he said, adding, "I will also talk to everyone across the country who has brought this revolution."

A medical team is on standby to monitor Hazare's health as he has already begun his fast in jail and a sharp deterioration could further worsen the crisis for the government, although there were signs a compromise would eventually be reached.

The protests across cities in India, helped spread by social networks, have not only rocked the ruling Congress party, they have sent shockwaves through the political class.

Students, lawyers, teachers, executives and civil servants have taken to streets in cities and remote villages stretching to the southern end of the country.

"The movement has meant politicians realize that they cannot fudge these issues or ignore public opinion any longer," said Vinod Mehta, editor of the weekly Outlook magazine.

"It has succeeded in concentrating the minds of politicians across the political spectrum on one issue for the first time."

A weak political opposition means that the government should still survive the crisis, but it could further dim the prospect for economic reforms that have already been held back by policy paralysis and a raft of corruption scandals.

SOCIAL NETWORK REVOLUTION

One Facebook fan page for Hazare has 285,000 followers, while the India Against Corruption page on Facebook has more than 350,000 followers where links and messages of support are posted. Several Twitter accounts have been set up by supporters to send out messages of where and when to protest.

A website petitioning for freedom of Hazare and against graft (www.avaaz.org) had signed up 170,000 people in 24 hours.

India's 24-7 news networks, competing to dig up the latest corruption scam, have played a vital role in whipping up the Hazare story. Protests have also sprung up in the United States and in Britain, both countries with large Indian communities.

Many have criticized Hazare for taking the government hostage over his demand for a specific bill to give more teeth to investigating and punishing graft in high office. But few take issue with his crusade against the scourge of corruption.

The urban middle class, who have prospered since the economy was opened up in the early 1990s, is fed up with the rampant corruption that they encounter, whether it be getting a driving license or buying a flat. The soaring cost of living has also exacerbated the situation.

Hazare's arrest, followed by the brief arrests of about 2,600 followers in the capital alone on Tuesday, shocked a nation with strong memories of Gandhi's independence battles against colonial rule with fasts and non-violent protests.

INDIA'S NEW GENERATION

Thousands of Hazare supporters held peaceful candle-light vigils through Wednesday night and again on Thursday, from the capital Delhi to the IT hub of Hyderabad and the financial capital, Mumbai.

Many of the crowd were young, with rucksacks on their backs, some with their faces painted. Others were older, decked out in outfits worn by the bespectacled Hazare, with his trademark white cap and pyjama-like kurta.

Demonstrations are part of daily life in the towns and cities of India, a country of 1.2 billion people made up of a myriad of castes, religions and classes. But spontaneous and widespread protests are rare and the scale of this week's outpouring of public fury has taken the government by surprise.

Singh, 78, who is widely criticized as out of touch, dismissed the fast by Hazare as "totally misconceived" and undermining the parliamentary democracy.

Hazare, a long-time social activist who is often compared to independence leader Mahatma Gandhi, became the unlikely thorn in the side of the ruling coalition when he went on hunger strike in April. He called off that fast after the government promised to introduce a bill creating an anti-corruption ombudsman.

The so-called Lokpal legislation was presented in early August, but activists slammed the draft version as toothless because the prime minister and judges were exempt from probes.

Over the past year an increasing number of company executives, senior opposition politicians, military officials and ministers have been brought down by graft.

In an unprecedented move, a sitting High Court justice from Kolkata was forced to defend himself against corruption accusations in an impeachment proceeding in Delhi's parliament, which was passed by the upper house on Thursday.

Still, Transparency International rates India in 87th place on the most corruption countries, according to a 2010 survey.

"It is only good that there is so much support for such a movement, but to tackle corruption the government will have to go beyond just Lokpal," said Harsh Mariwala, chairman of Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Children of depressed mothers have a different brain

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

Researchers think that brains are sensitive to the quality of child care, according to a study that was directed by Dr. Sonia Lupien and her colleagues from the University of Montreal published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The scientists worked with ten year old children whose mothers exhibited symptoms of depression throughout their lives, and discovered that the children's amygdala, a part of the brain linked to emotional responses, was enlarged.

Similar changes, but of greater magnitude, have been found in the brains of adoptees initially raised in orphanages. Personalized attention to children's needs may be the key factor. "Other studies have shown that mothers feeling depressed were less sensitive to their children's needs and were more withdrawn and disengaged," explained Drs. Sophie Parent and Jean S?guin of the University of Montreal's, who followed the children over the years.

Scientists have established that the amygdala is involved in assigning emotional significance to information and events, and it contributes to the way we behave in response to potential risks. The need to learn about the safety or danger of new experiences may be greater in early life, when we know little about the world around us. Indeed, studies on other mammals, such as primates, show that the amygdala develops most rapidly shortly after birth. "We do not know if the enlargement that we have observed is the result of long-term exposure to lower quality care. But we show that growing up with a depressed mother is associated with enlarged amygdala."

"Having enlarged amygdala could be protective and increase the probability of survival," Lupien said. The amygdala may be protective through a mechanism that produces stress hormones known as glucocorticoids. The researchers noted that the glucocorticoids levels of the children of depressed mothers who participated in this study increased significantly when they were presented with unfamiliar situations, indicating increased reactivity to stress in those children. Adults who grew up in similar circumstances as these children show higher levels of glucocorticoids and a greater glucocorticoid reaction when participating in laboratory stress tests. "What would be the long term consequences of this increased reactivity to stress is unknown at this point."

Although this study cannot clarify the causes of enlarged amygdala, the researchers note that the adoption studies have also shown that children who were adopted earlier in life and into more affluent families than others did not have enlarged amygdala. "This strongly suggests that the brain may be highly responsive to the environment during early development and confirms the importance of early intervention to help children facing adversity," Lupien said. "Initiatives such as prenatal and infancy nurse home visits and enriched day care environments could mitigate the effects of parental care on the developing brain." S?guin adds, "Future studies testing the effects of these preventive programs and observational studies involving children exposed to maternal depressive symptoms at different ages, and consequently for different lengths of time, should provide more insight into how this occurs, its long term consequences, and how it can be prevented."

Orange goo on Alaska shore was fungal spores (AP)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? An orange-colored goo that streaked the shore of a remote Alaska village turned out to be fungal spores, not millions of microscopic eggs as indicated by preliminary analysis, scientists said Thursday.

Further tests with more advanced equipment showed the substance is consistent with spores from fungi that create "rust," a plant disease that accounts for the color, said officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The gunk appeared Aug. 3 at the edge of Kivalina, an Inupiat Eskimo community at the tip of a barrier reef on Alaska's northwest coast.

The substance quickly dissipated from the village lagoon and the Wulik River. But many of Kivalina's 374 residents worried about the long-term effect on the water quality ? and some wildlife, fish and plants they use for food ? from a phenomenon they had never seen before. There was a report of dead minnows found in the lagoon the night the substance appeared.

City administrator Janet Mitchell said those fears will only intensify with the latest analysis, which did not include toxicity tests. She herself is troubled about the community's dwindling reserves in village water tanks that will need to be topped off.

"We are going have more concern from the public," she said. "If I'm concerned, then there will be others with concerns."

Rust fungus is a plant disease that creates a yellowish-orange or brown discoloration on leaves and stems before eventually growing spores that spread the infection. NOAA spokeswoman Julie Speegle said airborne spores could cause allergic reactions in humans or contribute to respiratory diseases.

Scientists have not determined whether this spore is among the 7,800 known species of rust fungi or some kind of unknown arctic species. To do that, they would need two other pieces of the puzzle: the host of the spores and the "fruiting body," akin to the mushroom stage, said Steven Morton, a scientist at a NOAA lab in Charleston, S.C., where the final tests were conducted.

A team at the lab found the spores to be unlike any they've examined, but Morton said many rust fungi in the Arctic have yet to be identified.

Morton said determining toxicity is beyond his area of expertise, but he "would definitely filter these spores out" of water sources. He said one of the tests run on the substance was to determine if there were any mineral components, such as iron.

"There were no minerals at all," he told The Associated Press.

Alaska officials will discuss the mystery among state agencies to determine whether to what actions to take if a potential risk is seen, said Emanuel Hignutt, a chemist with the state Department of Environmental Conservation lab in Anchorage. Not knowing the exact species complicates the matter, he said.

With so much still unknown, Mitchell is determined to find out how safe the community is, even if it means sending out frozen and refrigerated samples of the substance for private testing.

"Who's to say it didn't settle to the bottom of the lagoon?" she said.

The gooey, slimy substance turned powdery once it dried and probably went airborne, said Kivalina Councilwoman Frances Douglas. The material was found on at least one roof and in buckets set all over the village to collect rainwater.

Douglas estimated the volume of the substance at more than a thousand gallons. She said it was widely spread along the Wulik River and the lagoon, which is a half mile wide and six miles long. Orangey water was reported as far away as the village of Buckland, 150 miles southeast of Kivalina.

She found no reassurance in the findings announced Thursday.

"The fact that they have not completely ID'd this thing still leaves more questions in my mind," she said. "I'm not comfortable with this thing."

Hypnotherapy Courses And Child Birth: How Hypnotherapy Can ...

In plain and functional terms, hypnotism is a form of mind conditioning so strong, in some situations, that one person is able to control the mind of the other. Sometimes when people want to recall something, like a speech or an exam reader, they resort to tape recording the material and playing it over and over again until it gets engrained into the brains. That is the very same precept of hypnotism.

The medical utilisation of hypnosis and hypnotherapy has had the approval of the American Medical Association since 1958. Doctors warned, though, that it can only be finished by a medical professional who has satisfied the hypnosis and hypnotherapy course.

Hypnosis And Hypnotherapy For Pain Management

The first medical and functional use of hypnosis and hypnotherapy was as relaxant and pain killer. For patients who were predisposed or non-responsive to traditional anesthesia, doctors found hypnosis and hypnotherapy efficient in training the mind to pull off the pain sensation.

Hypnosis And Hypnotherapy For Natural Birth

Closely associated to the Lamaze natural birthing procedure by merit of its tranquilizing effect, hypnosis and hypnotherapy help pain management in natural child birth. By mental conditioning, the mother is helped to receive the pain of active labor and to handle each wave of contraction as though surfboarding through the waves of the oceans. The mother is mentally prepared to not struggle with the pain, but to float over it and welcome it. It has been deliberated that pain chemicals are activated more with resistance and stress, aggravating them unnecessarily.

Hypnosis And Hypnotherapy For Depression

One of the things people miss to understand is that depression is an malady that necessitates medical attention. It is not just an infantile emotional state that one person can defeat by himself. A patient of depression sees imaginary ghosts in his head that obsess him, making him withdraw from the rest of the world, searching comfort in solitary confinement which only makes the ghosts appear more frequently, and reacting to ghosts violently. Hypnosis and hypnotherapy have been accounted to potently transform the mental state of patients distressed from depression, chasing the ghosts away and restoring the patients to normal life in the family and community.

While approved as an aid for medical and practical treatments, individuals hoping to administer hypnosis and hypnotherapy are pressed to graduate from credible hypnosis and hypnotherapy course first before checking any patient.

Be a hypnotherapist in days. Take the Hypnotherapy Course from credible instructors offering Hypnosis Training Singapore.

Discussion: Should Couples pick Woods for Prez?

After missing the cut at the 93rd PGA Championship, Tiger Woods dropped to 28th on the U.S. Presidents Cup points list. Ineligible for the FedEx Cup playoffs, he will not compete in any of the four final Cup qualifying tournaments. U.S. captain Fred Couples has already said that he would use one of his two wildcard picks on Woods as long as he is healthy. But, should he?

By RANDALL MELL

END: #fbshare

Yes, Tiger Woods is one of my captain's picks, even off his form.

As long as he is telling me he wants to be on the U.S. Presidents Cup team, that he believes he can get himself ready, I am picking him.

Hey, it isn't as if Woods just missed his eighth cut in a row. His missed cut at the PGA Championship was just the eighth missed cut of his professional career. He isn't Ian Baker Woods just yet.

And weren't we having this same conversation a little more than a year ago when Woods stunk it up at the WGC-Bridgestone and hard questions were being asked about his worthiness for the Ryder Cup? Ask Francesco Molinari if Woods was worthy of that American team. Woods routed Molinari, 4 and 3, in singles at Celtic Manor. Woods was 3-1 in the team event.

Also, this is Tiger Woods. Unless Fred Couples puts Jack Nicklaus on the team, Woods will have more major championship titles on his resume than the rest of the American team combined.

I'm not saying Woods has earned a lifetime exemption to make this team, but based on what he has given the game, he's earned the right to make this decision for me. Mostly, Woods is on my team because if he felt he wasn't worthy, I'd trust him to tell me. If he wants to play for me, no way I am not picking him.

Woods is on my team because I believe he has time to shore up his game now that he appears healthy. He is also on my team because it is great for the game of golf to have him in the biggest events.

By Rex Hoggard

No. U.S. Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples has been rather clear on this, if Tiger Woods can remain upright for 18 holes and has a valid passport he will be on this year?s team when the matches travel to Australia. But he shouldn?t be.

Those who say Woods? Presidents Cup record, 18-11-1, and his power pairing with Steve Stricker two years ago at Harding Park, 4-0 in team play, is enough to rate a captain?s pick have allowed history to cloud reality.

Since his withdrawal from May?s Players Championship with injury, Woods has posted one out of six PGA Tour rounds under par, tied for 37th at the no-cut WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and missed the cut woefully at the PGA Championship with rounds of 77-73, and there were few signs of progress at Atlanta Athletic Club. Just ask Woods.

?I'm not at a point that I can let it go,? he said.

Couples announces his picks on Sept 26 and Woods will not play a Tour event before then, which means ?Captain Cool? must base his decision on recent performance.

Compounding the problem is the format at the matches. Everyone plays at the Presidents Cup, there is no room to hide a struggling star, and no good reason for Woods to be on the team.

Auto Insurance Policy | Expert Tips On Insurance, Flooding

The series of heavy rains and high winds around the state recently have left many residents dealing with repairs and cleanup in the aftermath.

While damage from wind is generally covered under a standard homeowners? policy, flooding is not, according to the Insurance Institute of Michigan.

The insurance association advises residents to check with their insurance agent or company regarding current coverage limitations and, more importantly, inquire about adding coverage to your homeowners or renters policy to protect against such losses.

Some of these related damages are covered under a standard homeowners?, renters? or auto insurance policy; some are covered to a noted limit; while others typically apply through a separate policy endorsement.

Damages caused by high winds, tornadoes and hail are covered by homeowners?, renters? and commercial insurance policies, says the IIM. However, flood coverage is excluded from homeowners and renters insurance policies. This protection is available through the purchase of a flood insurance policy.

Check with your insurance agent or company representative for details. Many licensed agents offer flood insurance. If you?re having trouble finding flood insurance, call the National Flood Insurance Program?s agent referral program at 1-888-CALL FLOOD. Also, visit www.floodsmart.gov to assess your flood risk, get an estimated cost for flood insurance coverage or browse through a list of insurance agents writing flood insurance coverage in your location.

Insured storm-covered

perils include: Property damage from hail, high winds and flying debris. Damage caused by high winds, tornadoes and hail is covered by homeowners?, renters? and commercial insurance policies.

Houses or belongings damaged as a result of a fallen tree ? whether it is your tree or a neighbor?s tree? are covered under your homeowners? insurance policy.

Power failure: While homeowners? policies differ, food spoilage is normally excluded if the cause of loss is an off-premises power outage. Limited coverage may be added by endorsement (coverage usually up to $500).

Basement water backup: Coverage for water backup in basements (drains and sewers) is excluded from flood insurance and most homeowners? insurance policies.

However, this coverage is available by endorsement on many homeowners?

Five North Carolina terrorism suspects plead not guilty (Reuters)

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Reuters) ? Five North Carolina men accused of forming a local ring with plans to assist others in waging holy war abroad entered pleas of not guilty in federal court here on Monday.

The men were among a group first indicted in 2009 for conspiracy to carry out acts of terrorism, including training for and seeking to commit attacks in places like Kosovo, Jordan and the Gaza Strip.

The five who entered pleas on Monday are scheduled to stand trial in United States District Court in mid-September.

Four of the men -- Dylan Boyd, 24; Ziyad Yaghi, 23; Mohammad Omar Aly Hassan, 24; and Hysen Sherifi, 27 -- will be tried together.

The fifth, Anes Subasic, 35, who is representing himself and has been disruptive in pre-trial proceedings, is expected to be tried separately.

Two other men, including the alleged ringleader, Daniel Patrick Boyd, 41, and a son, Zakariya Boyd, 22, earlier accepted plea agreements and are awaiting sentencing.

The group, including the elder Boyd and his two sons, Dylan and Zakarriya, was indicted in July 2009.

The indictment said the elder Boyd, a Muslim covert, was a veteran of terrorist training camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Between 2006 and 2009, the indictment said, he conspired to recruit others "to advance violent jihad, including supporting and participating in terrorist activities abroad and committing acts of murder, kidnapping or maiming persons abroad."

The elder Boyd had been indicted for allegedly plotting an attack by the group on the U.S. Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, but his plea did not include that specific charge.
