More DirecTV Nomad info uncovered, but details are still fuzzy

Even though DirecTV's website is ready to start doling out the information on its elusive Nomad TV box, a post on Gizmo Lovers digs through the available information to show just how much there is to know, and how much is still unknown. Between on a DirecTV satellite installer training video, a suggestive press release by fellow RVU member Morega and the long running rumor thread over on DBSTalk, the technology in play is certainly capable of both Slingbox style streaming and TiVoToGo sideloading, but what will actually be enabled is unclear. Once it rolls out, the Nomad will connect to multiroom capable satellite boxes via a wired network connection and transcode the video streams it pulls in for other devices like PCs and mobiles. All the other details are shrouded in rumor, regarding its use of h.264 and how much internal storage is available, but if you're wondering whether the long delayed DirecTV will really be able to compete with Sling, Monsoon and the flood of TV-streaming iPad apps available in 2011 then hitting the source link below is a good way to get started.

VoIP: Top 3 Tips to keep communications flowing and business ...

areed August 26th, 2011

As businesses across the east coast await the arrival of Hurricane Irene, it reminds us of how vulnerable we all are in times of natural disasters. With a seemingly steady stream of events hitting the U.S. lately, we thought it worthwhile to discuss business continuity planning. And, we?ve put together three important tips for using your business communications system to your advantage during a natural disaster.

If you?re not convinced this topic matters to your business, consider the following: 2010 was one of the deadliest years for natural disasters in more than a generation. According to the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), it handled a record number of natural disasters last year.? Unfortunately, 2011 is proving to be another year of turmoil with back-to-back killer tornadoes, widespread flooding and wild fires, jarring earthquakes ? and now powerful hurricanes.

For businesses, this string of events has made it difficult to stay open and competitive when evacuations, power outages and physical damage to buildings take precedent over the routine daily operations. Economists have estimated the losses in the billions ($15 or more) for this year alone ? with the long-term economic impact still unknown.

At Digium, we fully understand the impact a natural disaster can have on your business. We received first-hand experience with the string of tornadoes that hit the south in April, which directly impacted our corporate headquarters.? In 2010, we also saw the impact of an earthquake in Haiti; in that case, our Asterisk open source communications platform played a role in providing emergency communications solutions for the people and businesses in Haiti.

With all of this in mind, we offer these tips to help you better ensure that your business is able to weather the storm.

#1 ? Make Sure Your Employees Are Safe and Have an Emergency (Mobile) Plan
When disaster hits, you have to consider the best way to maintain your business in triage mode. The first action is obvious, but critical ? ensure your employees? well being, along with that of their families?.? To reach them, ensure you can access standard and emergency contact information for all employees (don?t assume you can get hard copies of this information from your office/building). Having a mobile communications plan as a backup is critical.

#2 ? Redundancy, redundancy, redundancy: Your Business Communications System Backup
Some items may be out of your control.? What happens when the battery backup unit is not functioning for your local telephone lines?? Depending on the backup system in place, this could happen 8-24 hours after a power outage occurs.? Consider the generators you have to keep your servers or other key network and communications equipment active: are they tested and fully fueled?? Also, investigate co-locating or gaining access to a co-location for your key communications services ? such as your phone lines and phone system.? VoIP makes this easy.? The nature of IP switching and redundant technologies or routes through MPLS or other IP networks inherently let you have back up your data and IP voice communication to active networks through your service provider.? You will need to guarantee power to your phone system and have an active VoIP service to accomplish this. ?If you happen to be strictly old-school, you can set up a pay-for-usage VoIP service as a cheap alternate route.? Oh, and keep your cell phone in your pocket just in case.

#3 ? Create a Plan to Maintain Business Operations
Beyond basic connectivity and communications, there are steps to keep your business operating even when everything around you is down.? Consider such things as: ?how will you make payroll, ship orders, and maintain inventory in the midst of a disaster? Many companies go through a serious risk analysis process and have created a physical back-up location where redundant applications, hardware and services are available to maintain business.? Every business should consider backup plans for business operations. For example, ask: how much of my services are cloud-based or virtualized?? Can I access? back-up servers or services for payroll?? How will I access my shipping and inventory if my business location is damaged?? Consider the number of days that you can afford to be out of business and determine what steps will help you maintain your business beyond that point.? Putting this all together as part of an official business continuity plan is key.

In the end, we?ve learned that businesses do bounce back and that people are greatly willing to help out and pitch in during a disaster.? And, keeping the lines of communication open is more important than ever when disaster strikes. Ultimately, it can help decrease the long-term damage that a natural disaster can have on your business.

Six Southern cookbooks

A round-up of recent cookbooks featuring new twists on traditional Southern tastes.

I've had a collection of recently published cookbooks on my desk that I have been meaning to tell you about. They are all Southern-themed with gorgeous photographs, funny stories, and recipe collections that range from familiar comfort food such as fried chicken and macaroni and cheese to the exotic ? pickled crawfish tails, anyone? Peanut butter turns up in the most unexpected places. 'Chow-chow,' a pickled relish of vegetables, is a perfect use for an abundance of cabbage.

Skip to next paragraph Kendra Nordin

Kendra Nordin thinks cooking and sharing a meal is an act of creativity that everyone should do every single day. Light some candles, set fresh flowers on the table, and sit down to enjoy a meal with friends ? this stuff feeds the soul. She is also a staff editor for The Christian Science Monitor and produces Stir It Up!

Recent posts

If these cookbooks made noises you'd hear the squeak of screen doors and the creak of old wooden floors with distant sounds of the guitar, mandolin, and banjo. Stereotypical? Perhaps. But that's what those of us who have traveled or lived in the South love about that region. Things don't change too much. Things are slow and uncomplicated. And food has to be good enough to keep folks at the table long enough for the storytellers to run out of wind.

By Martha Hall Foose
(256 pp., $32.50, Clarkson Potter)

Martha Hall Foose, a charming storyteller and cookbook author, released another Southern-flavored volume this spring titled A Southerly Course. (Her first cookbook "Screen Doors and Sweet Tea" earned her a James Beard Award.) With the gentle rhythm of her prose that even seeps into her lists of ingredients, it's hardly a surprise to discover that as a child Foose lived down the road from Southern writer Eudora Welty. With recipes such as "Yazoo Souffl?" and "Charming Cherry Pie" alongside delicious photos and gentle, humorous essays y'all will be smitten enough to slow down and stir things up in the kitchen, and that's all right.

Glazed Rutabags
From "A Southerly Course"
"These glazed rutabagas look like topaz when cooked down with brown sugar, cider vinegar, and butter. My friend Jule adores rutabagas and thrift store jewelry. I came up with this dish for her."

Serves 6

1 large rutabaga (about 2 lbs.), peeled and cut in 1/2-inch dice
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 teaspoon salt

Put the rutabaga in a large skillet and add enough salted water to cover. Set over medium-high heat and bring to a simmer. Cook for 10 minutes or until slightly tender. Drain off the water and add the butter, brown sugar, vinegar, and salt. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 12 minutes or until the rutabaga is very tender and the butter begins to brown. Serve warm.

Cuban man '24' proud of his 4 extra fingers, toes

Hernandez is proud of his extra digits and calls them a blessing, saying they set him apart and enable him to make a living by scrambling up palm trees to cut coconuts and posing for photographs in this eastern Cuban city popular with tourists. Known as polydactyly, Hernandez's condition is relatively common, but it's rare for the extra digits to be so perfect. (AP Photo/Javier Galeano)

(AP) ? They call him "Twenty-Four."

Yoandri Hernandez Garrido's nickname comes from the six perfectly formed fingers on each of his hands and the six impeccable toes on each foot.

Hernandez is proud of his extra digits and calls them a blessing, saying they set him apart and enable him to make a living by scrambling up palm trees to cut coconuts and posing for photographs in this eastern Cuban city popular with tourists. One traveler paid $10 for a picture with him, Hernandez said, a bonanza in a country with an average salary of just $20 a month.

"It's thanks to my 24 digits that I'm able to make a living, because I have no fixed job," Hernandez said.

Known as polydactyly, Hernandez's condition is relatively common, but it's rare for the extra digits to be so perfect. Anyone who glanced quickly at his hands would be hard-pressed to notice anything different unless they paused and started counting.

Hernandez said that as a boy he was visited by a prominent Cuban orthopedist who is also one of Fidel Castro's doctors, and he declared that in all his years of travel he had never seen such a case of well-formed polydactyly.

"He was very impressed when he saw my fingers," said Hernandez, who is the only one in his family to be born with extra digits.

In a part of the world where people's physical traits are often the basis for nicknames ? even unflattering ones like "fatty" or "shorty" ? "veinticuatro" ("twenty-four" in English) is not an insult but rather a term of endearment, and Hernandez, now 37, said his uniqueness has made him a popular guy. He has a 10-year-old son with a woman who now lives in Havana, and his current girlfriend is expecting his second child.

"Since I was young, I understood that it was a privilege to have 24 digits. Nobody has ever discriminated against me for that," he said. "On the contrary, people admire me and I am very proud. I have a million friends, I live well."

Nevertheless, it occasionally caused confusion growing up.

"One day when I was in primary school, a teacher asked me how much was five plus five?" Hernandez recalled. "I was very young, kind of shy, and I didn't say anything. She told me to count how many fingers I had, so I answered, "12!"

"The teacher was a little upset, but it was the truth," he said.

Hernandez said he hopes he can be an example to children with polydactyly that there's nothing wrong with them.

"I think it's what God commanded," he said. "They shouldn't feel bad about anything, because I think it's one of the greatest blessings and they'll be happy in life."

Kris Jenner to guest-host "The Talk" (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Apparently, appearing on her daughters' myriad reality shows isn't enough screen time for Kris Jenner.

The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" matriarch has signed on as a guest host for CBS' gab-fest "The Talk," an individual with knowledge of the production confirms to TheWrap.

Jenner will appear for two weeks early on this season, and is being eyed as a potential fill-in for Sharon Osbourne, who will be ramping down her schedule on the series this season in order to spend more time with her husband, Ozzy Osbourne.

Jenner will also co-host NBC's "Today" show later this year.

In addition, conservative comedian Sheryl Underwood will also co-host the show early this season, beginning on September 6, with the possibility that she may become a regular on the show.

As reported earlier, former "The King of Queens" star Leah Remini and former "Love, Inc." star Holly Robinson Peete likely won't be returning to the show this season, as their options have not yet been picked up.

Oil rises as Irene heads for the East Coast (AP)

NEW YORK ? Oil rose Thursday as concerns grew about the potential impact of Hurricane Irene on U.S. oil and gas supplies.

Benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude rose 14 cents to finish at $85.30 per barrel in New York. Brent crude, which is used to price oil produced abroad, rose 47 cents to end the day at $110.62 per barrel in London.

Analyst Tom Bentz with BNP Paribas Commodity Futures in New York thinks Irene is pushing up oil because of the possible problems that coastal flooding could cause for refineries and shipping. Refineries in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia produce nearly 8 percent of the country's gasoline and diesel fuel.

Irene is forecast to affect a broad area, from North Carolina to Canada, with flooding and winds as high as 120 miles an hour. Some forecasters think Irene could be the worst hurricane to hit the Northeast in 50 years.

Gasoline pump prices increased nearly a penny on Thursday to a national average of $3.582 per gallon. A gallon of regular has fallen 40 cents since peaking in May near $4 per gallon, but it's still almost 89 cents more than a year ago.

In other energy trading, heating oil rose 2.42 cents to finish at $2.9932 per gallon and gasoline futures rose 4.59 cents to end at $2.8017 per gallon. Natural gas was up almost a penny to finish at $3.931 per 1,000 cubic feet after the government said the nation's supplies rose last week.

Insight: Jobs exit opens door for nimble Apple rivals (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? The resignation of Apple Inc CEO Steve Jobs opens the door for rivals Samsung Electronics and HTC to battle for smartphone supremacy in salesrooms and courtrooms globally.

Jobs passed the reins to his right-hand man Tim Cook on Wednesday, saying he could no longer fulfill his duties.

Taiwanese group HTC, led by another well-known industry figure Peter Chou, is seen by many as the most direct competitor to Apple. It has seen sales surge in the last few quarters and has a reputation for innovative flair.

Samsung's fortunes are most tied to Apple, both as a competitor and supplier of components. The group also has a scale and an ability to react quickly that is rare in the sector.

Samsung's Galaxy range of smartphones and tablet computers running on Google's Android operating system are seen as the key competitor to Apple's iPhone and iPad, products which have changed the industry.

"Even before Steve Jobs' (resignation), Samsung was getting more and more optimistic that they can actually take on Apple in the smartphone arena," said Mark Newman, a former director of strategy at Samsung, where he worked for six years.

"The game is really now Samsung's to lose ... They are picking up market share because of the change in dynamics in the smartphone industry," added Newman, now a senior analyst for global memory and consumer electronics at Sanford C Bernstein.

BOOMING MARKET

Samsung this week unveiled four new cheaper smartphones targeting fast-growing emerging markets -- again setting it on a collision course with Apple, which sources say is readying a cheaper, 8 gigabyte iPhone.

Hong Won-pyo, executive vice president of Samsung's mobile division, told his team this week he was confident Samsung could soon overtake Apple in the smartphone market soon, according to a person at the meeting. Hong was speaking just hours before Jobs made his announcement to quit.

Apple and Samsung now scrap for top spot in the smartphone market, having overtaken the market leader for the past decade, Finland's Nokia, in the second quarter. Samsung's smartphone sales soared more than 500 percent in the second quarter, easily eclipsing Apple's 142 percent growth, though Apple sold about 1 million more phones. Nokia sales fell 30 percent.

News of Jobs' move helped Samsung shares rise 2.4 percent in Seoul on Thursday. The broader Korean market was up 0.6 percent.

"Investors were concerned that Apple would encroach into Android's turf, but Jobs' exit offers opportunities for Samsung to expand its smartphone market share at a time when Nokia is struggling," said Jeon Nam-joong, a fund manager at Consus Asset Management, which owns shares in Samsung.

Samsung has already stormed past its Asian rivals. Its market value of around $110 billion is comfortably more than Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic combined -- though still only a third of Apple's size.

Both Samsung and Apple will face increasingly stiff competition from new rivals in China and Taiwan, however.

Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp, China's top two telecommunications equipment makers, are looking to storm the smartphone market after hitting traditional network gear market.

Taiwanese group HTC -- is seen by many as the only phone maker able to innovate like Apple and has quickly risen to become the fifth largest smartphone vendor globally -- could benefit the most in this arena from any erosion of Apple's dominance.

"HTC may fare better than Samsung, which is currently languishing with legal hassles regarding alleged patent infringement and injunctions in Europe," analyst Richard Windsor said in a research note.

LEGAL BATTLES

Samsung's strength has been in being fast and cheap to the market with everything from TVs to chips and phones. That has created tension with Apple, which has complained Samsung's Galaxy range copies its iPads and iPhones.

Samsung and Apple, along with many of the other players in the fast-growing mobile devices market, are now engaged in costly and acrimonious patent and copyright battles.

Just on Wednesday, Apple won a preliminary injunction in a Dutch court stopping Samsung from marketing three smartphone models in some European countries.

"It's difficult to gauge precisely what the impact will be as our relationship with Apple is very complicated and intertwined with so many parts of our business," said a senior executive at Samsung's general management division.

Bernstein's Newman agreed.

"It's a very complex relationship and I think that it's very important to note that not only are they competitors, fierce rivals in the market place, but they need each other. I would say that Apple needs Samsung more than Samsung needs Apple."

The South Korean conglomerate supplied Apple with about $5.7 billion in components last year, some 4 percent of its total sales, and the portion grew to 5.8 percent in the first-quarter, driven by booming iPad and iPhone sales, which Samsung supplies chips for.

Samsung may also move more aggressively in closing the gap in software, one of its weakest links. Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee recently asked the firm's top managers to come up with various measures including M&A to raise its software prowess, according to South Korean media.

Lee, Korea's wealthiest man, is the second generation to run the sprawling Samsung empire which dominates the Korean corporate landscape. Like Jobs, Lee is seen as something of a visionary with an obsession for perfection. He once had a pile of substandard mobile phones piled up and burned in front of his employees to improve quality.

SONY LESSONS

While few expect Jobs' lesser role to imminently derail the Apple juggernaut, the history of Sony, a company once worshipped by Jobs, is worth remembering.

In the late 1970s, co-founder Akio Morita was firmly at the helm of the Japanese electronics innovator, wowing consumers and investors with its groundbreaking Walkman music player.

But as an aging Morita's influence waned, the fortunes of Sony also followed. It lost its cutting edge design and attitude and made a series of bad investments.

How far a once-innovative Sony had fallen behind was made clear when Jobs' Apple stole Sony's music player mantle with its iPod digital player in 2001.

Back in 2000, Sony's market value had been more than seven times Apple's. Today, Sony's market value is only one seventeenth of Jobs' creation.
