Iran suspends 2 players for 'immoral' celebration

updated 11:11 a.m. ET Oct. 31, 2011

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Iranian state TV says two players have been suspended from the country's professional soccer league for an "immoral" goal-scoring celebration.

The report Monday says Mohammed Nosrati of Persepolis squeezed the backside of teammate Sheis Rezaei while the Tehran team's players celebrated a goal against Damash Gilan. After Persepolis scored again in the 3-2 victory, YouTube footage appears to show Rezaei squeezing an unidentified teammate.

Nosrati and Rezaei say they did not intend to offend. Iran TV said they were indefinitely banned from entering any stadium and could face more sanctions.

Saturday's game was broadcast live to millions in the Islamic country that for years has tried to curb rowdy on-field behavior and foul language by players and spectators.

unthink-qsquareUnthink, the social networking platform whose marketing campaign involves a lot of Facebook bashing, has reached 100,000 registered users, the company is now reporting. As you may recall, the site quickly crashed after TechCrunch sent its usual heavy stream of traffic to the network, and it took Unthink over a day to recover. Now the number of visitors to the site is doubling daily, including both active users and casual visitors.

Regina Weinreich: Making Whoopie at the 20th Annual Jazz Loft Party

What were Laurel & Hardy doing at the annual jazz loft party? One of many great pleasures of this night of superb sound to benefit the Jazz Foundation of America's efforts to help musicians in need was Steven Bernstein's Millennial Territory Orchestra performing some wildly original accompaniment to the comic duo's silent movies, Double Whoopie and Wrong Again. But that's the kind of night it was on Saturday: while the northeast was challenged with a pre-Halloween ice storm, jazz devotees showed up and made their way around Chelsea's Hudson Studios drink in hand following their ears to hear a who's who of jazz royalty.

We spotted Mikhail Baryshnikov, Michael Imperioli and Hal Willner in the crowd, and some who simply could not stop themselves, a suited man with bunny ears, and another in red and black ladybug dress equipped with antennae. That's what I call acoustic accessories!

Sponsor Parmigiani contributed a "talking lounge" for "all deep philosophical conversations," but that did not keep the enthusiasm from spreading through the "blues," "jazz," and "Eat Here" lofts. These people really know how to throw a party for a good cause. As Wendy Oxenhorn, the Jazz Foundation's indefatigable executive director, pointed out, the Jazz Foundation of America offers financial and legal aid to jazz and blues musicians whose careers are no longer able to meet their housing or health care needs. Donors were able to place "bets" on who would win the Battle of the Saxes -- a rare case in which such battles carry non-musical significance. The "best" was based on applause.

Of all those on the program, I wanted to hear Lou Reed most, and kept him on the radar as I wandered, listening to the Tom Harrell Quintet featuring Wayne Escoffery, Ugonna Okegwo, David Berkman and Jonathan Blake, the Randy Weston African Rhythms Quartet with T.K. Blue, Vincent Ector, and Alex Blake doing what I can only call a slam bass. We did hear the tail end of the featured sax battle, but never found Lou Reed, who I'm told played with Jimmy Norman. Oh, well, we had a sublime night anyway, especially listening to a divine duet, Ron Carter on bass and Gene Bertoncini on guitar, performing the standards "Autumn Leaves" and "My One and Only Love." Yeahhh.

Naked and drunk Moscow motorist crashes into 17 cars (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? A naked and drunk motorist sped through central Moscow Sunday, crashing into 17 cars before being stopped by police who chased him across a large part of the capital, state television said.

"When police made him open his door, it became clear he was completely naked," said state TV, showing lines of cars with shattered windscreens and battered sides.

Local media said the man, who appeared to be in his 40s, was from Moldova and showed a picture him grinning in the back seat of a police car.

State TV said preliminary tests showed the driver had an "abnormally high" level of alcohol in his system.

TV pictures showed distressed drivers with bloodied hands and faces sitting in their cars, but police said there were no serious injuries.

"The most dangerous part was when he almost hit a bus full of school children," police spokesman Gennady Bogachev told state TV, adding that four of the 17 vehicles were police cars.

Deadly Taliban Kabul attack highlights US reliance on private contractors

Eight private contractors were killed in a Taliban attack in Kabul Saturday, serving as a sharp reminder of the US military's heavy ? and controversial ? reliance on contractors.

A day after a Taliban suicide bomb killed 12 Americans in a NATO convoy in Kabul, the military has yet to release details about the victims, but it appears that eight of them were civilian contractors.

Had all the Americans killed been soldiers, the attack would have resulted in the fourth largest single day loss for American forces in more than a decade of war here.

The death of eight contractors alongside NATO soldiers stands as a sharp reminder of the heavy reliance the US military and NATO forces have placed on private contractors to wage this war.

Throughout the American-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, civilians have played a vital role doing everything from running cafeterias and laundry services to training local militaries and operating drones.

With the US reliant on an all-volunteer military, it?s unlikely that the US could have sustained more than a decade of foreign wars without these contractors. However, as contractors have become increasingly involved with combat operations, their role in America?s wars has become ever more controversial.

?Information about this aspect of the war only comes out when something happens or goes wrong, but all in all it?s a very secretive and not transparent part of the war,? says Thomas Ruttig, co-director of the Afghanistan Analysts Network in Kabul. The recent bombing ?should be used as an opportunity to discuss their role, and also better define their role so it becomes more transparent what they?re doing over here.?

In Afghanistan, the US Defense Department alone employs nearly as many private contractors as there are US military personnel here. As of March, there were 90,000 private contractors working for the DoD, while there were about 99,000 US service members deployed here, according to the Brookings Afghanistan Index put out by the Washington-based Brookings Institution. This figure does not include private contractors working for other government agencies in Afghanistan.

Although NATO forces have made training the Afghan Army and police one of their major priorities here, they are still reliant on approximately 2,765 private contractors to act as trainers.

While the nature of many of these contractors? work remains unclear, there is evidence that some may be involved with direct combat operations against the insurgents here. Others support counterinsurgency efforts through training local forces, installing and maintaining surveillance equipment, and supporting intelligence operations.

With so many civilians on the battlefield, determining what makes a combatant or a civilian in Afghanistan has become more ambiguous, especially since NATO forces adopted the counterinsurgency doctrine.

Counterinsurgency strategy relies heavily on reconstruction efforts, such as road building projects. These activities used to be the mainstay of civilian agencies in places like Afghanistan, but now many of these projects are done in the interest of supporting the military?s counterinsurgency goals rather than for entirely humanitarian purposes.

As a result, even private contractors not employed directly by NATO or the Defense Department may find themselves working in support of military goals.

For Afghans, the vast sums foreign forces spend on contracting is a growing point of contention.

?I think that when the Americans have the same number of civilians as they do military forces it?s a waste of money, especially since America is also facing an economic crisis,? says Mahmoud Khan, a member of parliament from Kandahar province. ?From the beginning, they needed to send Afghans to foreign countries to give them degrees. If they?d done that there would have been professional Afghan advisers who could have worked here forever.?
