Skin hair skims heat off elephants

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? Body hair in mammals is typically thought to have evolved to keep us warm in colder prehistoric times, but a new study suggests that it may do the opposite, at least in elephants. Epidermal hair may have evolved to help the animals keep cool in the hot regions they live in, according to new research published Oct 10 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Conor Myhrvold and colleagues at Princeton University.

Though the idea that low surface densities of hair can help dissipate heat is a popular concept in engineering, the biological and evolutionary significance of sparse skin hair is not well known. The authors studied the effects of skin hair densities in Asian and African elephants on thermoregulation in these animals, and concluded that elephant skin hair significantly enhances their capacity to keep cool under different scenarios like higher daytime temperatures or less windy days.

Their research suggests that the dense body hair of furry animals helps with insulation, but as skin hair grows sparser, a tipping point is reached where, for animals such as elephants, skin hair begins to help release heat from the body rather than retain it.

According to the authors, elephants have the greatest need for such heat loss to maintain a constant body temperature, since they are large terrestrial mammals that live in hot climates. Their results are the first to suggest that animal hairs could play a role in heat dissipation that could be beneficial to certain animals, like elephants. Elie Bou-Zeid, corresponding author on the study, says "Sparse hair increases heat dissipation from the skin of elephants and help the largest terrestrial mammal meet its thermoregulation needs."

(AP) ? Evangelical leaders worried that Mitt Romney's Mormonism could suppress conservative turnout on Election Day are intensifying appeals for Christians to vote.

In poll after poll, evangelicals have overwhelmingly said they would back the Republican presidential nominee despite theological differences with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But what had been thought of as a hypothetical question for American evangelicals for years, Southern Baptist leader Al Mohler said recently, is now a reality with this election and is being tested in a contest that will likely be decided by slim margins.

"The fact is that Mitt Romney is a Mormon, and many of our people are very, very uncomfortable about voting for a Mormon, as I am. I supported somebody else in the primary. But, hey, we have no option," said Steve Strang, an influential Pentecostal publisher, in a conference call with pastors last week.

Strang was speaking to participants in Pulpit Freedom Sunday, an annual challenge to IRS rules on churches' political activity. While arguing that the government regulations had the effect of silencing pastors, he also cited Mormonism as one reason clergy haven't more forcefully urged congregants to vote this year.

"The Mormons are good, God-fearing people in their own way," Strang said. "We have to be sure our people don't stay at home."

Last month, more than two dozen prominent evangelical leaders issued a statement emphasizing the values spelled out in the GOP platform against abortion, gay marriage and other policies were more important than an individual politician's religion. Christians generally do not consider Mormonism part of historic Christianity, although Mormons do.

"Some have tempered their enthusiasm for sound governing principles by their concerns over differences in a candidate's theological doctrine," the letter states, without mentioning Mormonism. "It is time to remind ourselves that civil government is not about a particular theology but rather about public policy."

Among those signing the statement were the Rev. Franklin Graham, head of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association; veteran political operative Ralph Reed of the Faith & Freedom Coalition, a political action group for religious conservatives; Mark DeMoss, an evangelical adviser to the Romney campaign; and Frank Wright, head of the National Religious Broadcasters, the Washington lobby for Christian radio, TV and digital media.

Evangelicals make up about a third of voters who are registered or lean Republican. Some Republicans have estimated that a significant number of Christian conservatives have not been voting in presidential elections and have focused on getting them registered. But that effort has a new wrinkle this year: Romney is the first Mormon nominee for president from a major party.

DeMoss, who has supported Romney since his first bid for the GOP nomination in 2008, said he has found evangelical concerns about voting for a Mormon steadily decreasing, "but there are people for whom it still is an issue."

The Assemblies of God, a Missouri-based Pentecostal group with more than 12,600 U.S. churches, has launched its first national voter education and registration drive in a presidential-election year. George O. Wood, the denomination's leader, said he was inspired to undertake the project by Champion the Vote, which works to identify and mobilize previously unregistered conservative Christians.

The Assemblies of God voter drive makes no mention of specific candidates or their religion, but the denomination is among the many Christian churches that, in an effort to counter what it considers heretical, has been challenging Mormonism as unbiblical. Pentecostals are known for spirit-filled worship, belief in divine healing and, according to surveys, their social conservatism.

"I think our people recognize we live in a pluralistic culture, therefore one has to look at a candidate and see what values and policies they have independent of what their religious association might be and make a determination on that basis," Wood said in a phone interview. "You can form friendships with people even though you don't agree with them doctrinally."

Pastors are struggling to get that message across while still making clear that important doctrinal differences with Mormons remain. Conservative Christians believe they have a duty to point out beliefs they fear could lead others astray and risk their salvation.

As Strang was getting out the vote last month, the news editor of his best-known magazine, Charisma, wrote a column calling Mormonism "bizarre" and a "Christianesque cult." Another columnist called Mormon doctrines "creepy and (with apologies to Mitt Romney) demonic."

Janet Parshall, a veteran Christian broadcaster now with Moody Radio, invited on her show Tricia Erickson, a former Mormon turned born-again Christian and author of "Can Mitt Romney Serve Two Masters? The Mormon Church Versus the Office of the Presidency of the United States of America."

Parshall effusively praised Mormons for their dedication to family and compassion for others. She spoke fondly about working with Mormons in Washington. "When we would fight for pro-family issues, boy I tell you, we'd be able to do that with our Mormon friends because they shared the same kinds of values that we did," Parshall said. But she said there was a need to point out "what is biblically correct and what is not." In the ensuing interview, Erickson went on to call Mormonism blasphemous and describe rituals inside Mormon temples, which are for Mormons in good standing only, as "silly," ''bizarre" and "violent."

Southern Baptist leader Al Mohler and other academics took up the issue in a discussion last month at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, the flagship training ground for future leaders of the nearly 16 million-member denomination. Called "The Mormon Moment? Religious Conviction and the 2012 Election," the speakers went to great lengths to emphasize that religion should not be a consideration when voting.

Russell Moore, a theologian and a seminary dean, said a candidate's religious outlook should be examined specifically for "whether or not the person is going to be able to work for the common good." But he and others warned that supporting a candidate for president does not mean accepting his faith.

"If a President Romney is elected," Moore said, "we're the people who are willing to, if we're invited into the Oval Office, say, 'President Romney, here's where we agree with you, here's what we like about what you're doing, and we sincerely want to plead with you to believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ so you don't perish everlasting.'"

Hugo Ch?vez to 'deepen' revolution as opponents miss mark

Ch?vez's victory last night gives him another six-year term, frustrating opponents who say his policies and management style have squandered the country's biggest-ever oil boom.

Venezuelan President Hugo Ch?vez won a mandate to stay in office for another six years, giving him and his allies a chance to consolidate the "Bolivarian 21st-century Socialism" that they have promoted for the past 14 years.

President Ch?vez's campaign vowed to keep his policies on their present course. It's a path that frustrates opponents, who say his policies and management style have squandered the country's biggest-ever oil boom on unfinished projects, wasteful sole-source contracts, and aid to other countries.?But the status quo is just fine with many Ch?vez supporters celebrating in the street.

"This reaffirms the revolutionary process in Venezuela," says Blanca Paredes, a self-employed dessert-maker, at a spontaneous street party in the overwhelmingly anti-Ch?vez borough of Chacao. "I want to see continuation of the housing policies, the inclusion of the poor, youth employment, and also policies that limit crime." She quibbled with some policies, like currency controls, but says Ch?vez is on the right track.

In the lead-up to the election, the government committed itself to building millions of new homes, among other expanded social programs. The challenge will now be to fulfill these promises, as the country faces many demands on its checkbook. It has been advancing the development of the Orinoco Belt, the world's biggest oil deposit. That will cost $250 billion over the next six years, the state oil company says.

"Half of Venezuela doesn't like the revolution," says Carlos Romero, a political scientist at the Central University of Venezuela. "Some of the supporters of Ch?vez complain about the inefficiency of the Bolivarian revolution."

Opposition fails to shed image of oligarchs

The opposition backed a youthful candidate this year ? Henrique Capriles Radonski ? surrounding him with campaigners who were barely out of university when Ch?vez first burst onto the political scene in 1992.

But the opposition was unable to shed its decade-old image of being right-wing oligarchs with pretensions to dictatorship. That stereotype of the opposition largely comes from a period of instability in 2002 and 2003, when opponents of Ch?vez mounted a strike in the oil industry, led massive street marches, and briefly ousted the president in a coup.

"The opposition is in shock and retreat," says Francisco Toro of "Caracas Chronicles,"?an English-language blog about Venezuela. "I don't see people rushing to take the mantle of opposition leader."

Thousands of Ch?vez opponents flew to Venezuela for yesterday's vote, such as Manuel Ochoa, who has lived in Virginia for 20 years.

"If Ch?vez wins, it would be painful, but you have to keep fighting," he said before the results were announced.

An emotional connection

But for Ms. Paredes, the dessert-maker, and many others in Venezuela, Ch?vez's victory was in fact a relief. His campaign hammered home the message that his opponent, Mr. Capriles, would eliminate social programs, privatize the country's $120 billion-a-year oil company, and boost transit fares. The fear factor was powerful among voters interviewed on the street yesterday?in Caracas, who said they didn't trust the challenger to maintain Chavez's social programs.

"Ch?vez has helped my family a lot," says Kimberley P?rez, a student taking time off as she is expecting a baby in January. "Capriles is making promises, but I don't believe him. It won't be the same. He's going to take away the missions."

The election result vindicated Ch?vez?s strategy of emphasizing his emotional connection with voters. His slogan was "Chavez, heart of my fatherland." And his fans took things further: "He who doesn't vote for Ch?vez doesn't love his mother," say some stickers posted around the capital.

Which ideas will be fulfilled?

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? California motorists faced another day of record-breaking gasoline prices Sunday, though relief appeared to be on the way.

In its latest update early Sunday, AAA reported that the statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $4.655. Saturday's average of $4.6140 was the highest since June 19, 2008, when it was $4.6096.

The four-penny-per-gallon jump Sunday was less than Saturday's increase, which was 12 cents.

Sunday's price, like Saturday's, was the highest in the nation, with the Golden State overtaking Hawaii as the state with the most expensive fuel due to a temporary reduction in supply.

Gov. Jerry Brown ordered state smog regulators Sunday to allow winter-blend gasoline to be sold in California earlier than usual to help drive prices down. Winter-blend gas typically isn't sold until after October 31. Few refineries outside the state are currently making summer-blend gas, putting the pressure on already-taxed California manufacturers.

In some locations, fuming motorists paid $5 or more per gallon while station owners had to shut down pumps in others.

A station in Long Beach had California's priciest gas at $6.65 for a gallon of regular, according to GasBuddy.com. Meanwhile customers at an outlet in San Pablo paid just $3.49, the lowest price in the state.

The average for a gallon of regular was $4.69 in Los Angeles, $4.71 in San Diego and San Francisco, $4.55 in Sacramento and $4.90 in Santa Barbara, according to GasBuddy.com.

The dramatic surge came after a power outage Monday at a Southern California refinery that reduced supply in an already fragile and volatile market, analysts said. The refinery came back online Friday and prices were expected to stabilize in the coming days.

Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.com, predicted the average price could peak as high as $4.85 before coming back down.

Best Secrets Of A Successful Internet Marketer | Eric Chua : Life - First

Sometimes, you might get struck with a great business idea that produces that proverbial ?light bulb moment.? When you have a great idea, you can start on your new venture. Keep reading for some ideas that can catapult your business to the next level.

Consider using well thought out phrases, such as special or limited edition, when choosing to advertise your items online. People generally want to own items which are exclusive, so using these phrases in your marketing materiel can tempt people to purchase your product quickly.

Including a FAQ can be a helpful way to advertise the products you sell or the services you offer. Ask and answer relevant questions, and incorporate your products into some of your answers. Try to write in a relaxed manner, and mention your products without seeming to force them on your reader.

TIP! Provide your frequent customers or visitors with a reward of some kind for making purchases from your site. It is crucial to always retain your customers, and being generous and caring goes a long way towards showing them what a great company you have.

You should learn to utilize HTML tags. HTML codes help you to flag content that you feel is important for search engines to see. A search engine crawler will rate your site based on which tags you use and emphasize. It, then, is important to emphasize your critical keywords.

The formatting of your website?s text plays an important role in its attractiveness and success. Use different font types to increase the effectiveness of different words. This technique can improve clarity in the message that you want to convey so that your audience can receive your message in the intended interpretation.

To improve site traffic and thus increase sales utilize SEO content and offer unique, original content. Online retailers with common products should especially note this, as there is more competition in the search engine. Make your site stand out by writing unique content and tailoring your approach to your audience.

TIP! People will give you more respect if you use a proper title. If you own your company, you?re now the CEO! What we call ourselves is important.

Build a fantastic website and concentrate on SEO content once you have your site finished. This will be the first, and one of the most important, steps for anyone building a web business. Once your website operates without glitches and looks great, you are ready to move forward with marketing.

Internet marketers need to be at the cutting edge of the technology curve. When your company stops updating itself, your clients may start trusting you less. Some of your customers will appreciate the efforts that your company makes in dealing with new technology and ideas and will hold your company and products in high regard.

Create your own videos of yourself describing your product. By doing this, your customers will know that you use the products yourself. You can show your audience the benefits of using the product, and highlight features that are difficult or impossible to describe in text. You will be able to show the video on your blog or company social media sites.

TIP! Internet marketing can come in many forms but one of the most basic forms is to place ads strategically around the internet. AdSense and other Internet applications are available at a reasonable price.

Giving customers incentives will help them to place orders quickly. You could offer discounted shipping or a free gift for ordering by a certain date. Another excellent option for incentives is to offer a limited time offer for the first comers. This induces people to make a purchase quickly because of a perceived discount.

Use the word, ?fast? in ads and product text. Time is sometimes given more priority as opposed to saving money, it is then important to make sure that you let customers know you do things in a quick manner.

Online marketing copy can be used to create some sort of emotional attachment for your readers and the products you are trying to sell. Encourage readers to imagine life with the use of a product you are selling. The advertising copy you write must get readers to imagine all of the fantastic features of your product.

TIP! Start small when building a site to market a product and gradually grow, adding new features or components slowly. If your site has a million indexed pages, search engines are more likely to pass it by in favor of sites with a few thousand pages.

Most cell phone providers offer the option of adding a dedicated work number to your existing mobile device. A dedicated number is a great way to keep your business and personal lives separate.

Be sure your site?s content is up-to-date as it can be. Old, outdated information is going to give the viewer the impression that you do not care about your company, and therefore your customers. Fresh, new content will attract readers and increase your ranking within the search engines, too.

One great Web marketing tip is to be the authority on everything you put on your site. This is vital because you?ll gain credibility for providing proper information, but you can lose it too if you?re seen as dishonest by saying you?re an expert.

TIP! Your internet marketing strategy doesn?t have to be limited to the internet itself. In person conferences can be arranged, making Internet marketing a great tool on and offline.

Customers will be much more interested in clicking on your banner if you create something enticing that doesn?t look exactly like the other boring banners out there. Make sure the banner links directly to your product or service page correctly. Just make sure you use appropriate text around the ad that does entice them to click on the ad, so they also know where they are being taken to. This will ensure that the ad does not appear to be an advertisement.

Keep detailed records of your statistics. This information should include the amount of traffic your website receives, the referrals you receive as well as the amount of sales. Statistics help you see what is working and what is not.

Your CRM or ?customer relationship management? is a useful database to help you assess and create marketing success. You can use this to see the purchasing habits of all your customers. You can create custom communications this way that highlight similar products, accessories or complementary items to those that they?ve bought recently.

TIP! Try and make all your banner advertisements look unique. People will be convinced to click on your banner ad when you make your banner ads more exciting.

No matter what your product or service is, you have to be able to generate profits. These tips will put you where you want to be, do not delay in implementing these ideas in your own marketing programs. With a bit of focus and some dedication, you can reap the rewards of a successful web marketing strategy

Cubs two-hit by Astros to reach 100 losses

CHICAGO (AP) ? For all the struggles the Cubs have had over the last five decades or so, they haven't reached this milestone for futility in a while. The Cubs got loss No. 100 on Monday night, the first time they've reached that number since 1966.

Lucas Harrell threw six shutout innings to lead the Houston Astros to a 3-0 win Monday night.

Four Houston pitchers combined on a two-hitter and Fernando Martinez homered for the third consecutive game.

"It didn't quite seem like a playoff atmosphere," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "There was a little bit of sleepwalking at the plate. Are guys ready to get out of here? I don't know. I won't put words in anybody's mouth. We didn't take out at bats like we wanted to stick around."

The Astros avoided their franchise-record 107th loss in the opener of their final series in the National League before they move to the American League next season.

The Cubs lost 100 games in a season for the first time since 1966 and were shut out for the 14th time this season. Chicago has lost more than 99 games twice, setting the franchise record of 103 losses in 1962 and 1966. The Cubs have dropped 12 of their last 14.

"I hope (the young guys) learn it's not fun when we lose," Alfonso Soriano said in a very quiet Cubs clubhouse. "Baseball is fun when you win. It doesn't matter how much money you make, it's not fun when you lose."

Houston has matched its franchise record for losses with 106, but the Astros have won four of their last five and are 14-14 since Sept. 1.

Harrell (11-11) struck out seven in six scoreless innings for his first victory since Aug. 14, which was also against the Cubs. He walked one and allowed two hits, a single by David DeJesus and a double by Anthony Rizzo. Harrell retired the last nine batters he faced.

"Lucas, we were only going to go five innings with him. We weren't going to take him over 100 pitches," interim manager Tony DeFrancesco said. "He really pitched well with confidence, he fell behind early and all of a sudden he got locked in. A two-hit shutout here is a pretty special game."

Jose Valdez, Fernando Rodriguez and Wesley Wright did not allow a hit in the final three innings. Martinez's sixth home run was a leadoff shot off Jason Berken in the second inning for a 1-0 lead.

Matt Dominguez hit an RBI triple to left field in the fourth inning after Martinez singled. Left fielder Alfonso Soriano's throw home bounced past catcher Welington Castillo as Martinez scored for a 2-0 lead.

Scott Moore's RBI single in the eighth off Shawn Camp put the Astros ahead 3-0. Berken (0-3) allowed two runs in 4 2-3 innings in his final start of the season.

According to STATS, LLC, the last time two teams with 100 losses or more played was Sept. 30, 1962. The Cubs were involved then, too ? they faced the New York Mets.

Houston and Chicago are set to play Tuesday night.

"It's a long season, but it's not over," Soriano said. "We still have two more games. Hopefully we win them."

NOTES: ... The Astros are playing their final series in the NL against the same team they played in the first game in franchise history. The Houston Colt .45s beat the Cubs 11-2 on April 10, 1962. The Astros are 374-328 against the Cubs, their most victories against any opponent. .Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro played in his 160th game and could play in all 162, which would make him the first Cub to play in all 162 games at shortstop. His 159 starts at shortstop surpassed the single-season franchise mark of 158 starts at shortstop set by Ivan DeJesus (1978) and Don Kessinger (1968). . Astros bench coach Joe Pettini left the team for the final series due to a death in his family and will be replaced on the bench by catching and advance scouting coordinator Matt Sinatro. .Cubs right-hander Chris Volstad (3-11, 6.64 ERA) will start Tuesday against Houston right-hander Bud Norris (6-13, 4.82).

New Terraria Trailer Teases Extra Content For Consoles ...

If there is anything games such as Minecraft or platforms such as Xbox LIVE Arcade and Steam have taught us, it?s that gamers don?t necessarily need amazing graphics to enjoy a game. Provide an engaging or fun gameplay experience and gamers will overlook plenty of shortcomings, including graphics. New services such as Steam Greenlight have even put indie games front-and-center, rather than dismissing them as a niche product.

Today 505 Games, the publisher of the indie success Terraria, released a preview trailer for the console version of their game. It, of course, looks the same as the PC version of the game, but the trailer does tease that extra content will be coming for console gamers.

Terraria is, as 505 Games describes it, a ?block-building? action-adventure sandbox game. Players take on the side-scrolling adventure to explore huge game worlds, collect materials and loot, and craft things. The high-concept for Terraria is ?2-D Minecraft,? but the game has differentiated itself in both style and substance from the Mojang game.

?The block-building genre has taken the world by storm and Terraria has garnered a massive following through its increased focus on adventure and discovery.? said Tim Woodley, head of global brand for 505 Games. ?We?re looking forward to bringing an already hugely successful experience to a brand new console audience and we can?t wait for the existing Terraria fan base to experience all-new content.?

Terraria will be available on Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network starting in ?early 2013.?

(AP) ? A 25-year-old man initially arrested Sunday on an assault charge after Lindsay Lohan claimed he grabbed her in her New York hotel room in an argument over cellphone images was freed hours later and his arrest voided when the charge could not be substantiated, law enforcement officials said.

Instead, Christian LaBella of Valley Village, Calif., and Lohan filed harassment complaints with police against each other after they were interviewed by police about their run-in, law enforcement officials said.

Afterward, Lohan publicist Steve Honig expressed outrage that police did not charge LaBella.

"We think it's both distressing and outrageous," he said in a telephone interview. "Lindsey was assaulted and there needs to be a consequence for that."

LaBella could not be reached for comment.

LaBella was taken into custody about 6 a.m. after a 911 call came from the swank W Hotel in Manhattan's Union Square where Lohan apparently pulled the fire alarm, the two officials said. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

A former congressional aide, LaBella was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge but released later Sunday. The charge could not be substantiated so the arrest will be voided, the officials said.

The paperwork was being completed on cross-harassment complaints, which are considered a violation, and no other legal action would be taken, the officials said.

Lohan and LaBella met hours earlier at a night club, though it was unclear whether they previously knew each other, the officials said. They went back to her room, when she noticed the cellphone photos of her on his phone and grabbed the device, the officials said.

She claimed LaBella grabbed her and threw her, but later he said she had forcefully taken his phone, the officials said. Lohan was injured but not hospitalized, Honig said in a statement.

"Lindsay has spoken with police and is fully cooperating with the investigation," he said after LaBella's arrest.

This is Lohan's second run-in with law enforcement in as many weeks in New York City. The 26-year-old was accused last week of clipping a pedestrian with her car outside a nightclub and driving away. She was given a ticket and was scheduled to appear in court Oct. 23. Honig has said he expects those allegations to be proven false.

The actress was also involved in a car accident in California this summer that sent her and an assistant to a hospital, but didn't result in serious injuries for anyone. The accident remains under investigation.

In May, she was cleared of allegations that she struck a Hollywood nightclub manager with her car.

Lohan remains on informal probation for taking a necklace from a jewelry store without permission last year. That means she doesn't have to check in with a judge or probation officer but could face a jail term if arrested again.

Lohan recently filmed "The Canyons," an indie film written by "Less Than Zero" and "American Psycho" author Bret Easton Ellis.

Steve Tomaszewski, a spokesman for Illinois Rep. John Shimkus, confirmed Sunday afternoon that LaBella has worked for the congressman in his Washington office. Tomaszewski said no one from the Republican's office had been contacted by LaBella.
