Union, Veolia Reach Deal On Long Island Bus

On Jan 1, Long Island Bus will change its name to NICE, and get a new look.

A bus drivers union has reached a tentative contract agreement with the new private operator of Long Island Bus, averting an interruption in Nassau County bus service.

Veolia Transportation will take over the bus lines from New York?s MTA on January 1st in a move meant to save the county money.

Patricia Bowden, president of Transport Workers Union Local 252, said she was thrilled that there would be no workforce reductions.

?I believe that it is a fair contract, it?s not the same as the MTA, because that?s a public [agency],? she said, ?but for a private company I think it?s very fair.?

Veolia confirmed that there would be no layoffs. ?Every TWU member who worked on Long Island Bus and applied and was qualified to join Veolia to work on NICE has been made a job offer,? an email from the company said.

The contract must be ratified by the union membership before it takes effect. The union said a date for a ratification vote will be scheduled for January.

On January first, the service?s name will be changed to NICE, an acronym for Nassau Inter-County Express. Veolia said all current routes will continue to run, and will cover all of the same stops they normally do. Although the MTA will no longer be involved with operations, riders can still use their MetroCards.

In Mexico City, a Design Playhouse

When DFC first appeared six years ago, this decorative-accessories company stood out for over-the-top designs that were not traditionally tasteful and did not play to any trends. Now its goods -- made in Mexico with age-old techniques that often lead to unconventional results -- are on display at DFC's first store, in Mexico City.

The company, started by Tony Moxham and Mauricio Paniagua, both transplants from New York, opened the shop in early December. The space, which offers items like fluorescent hand-painted trophy heads ($464), above, has a mirrored ceiling framed by pink neon tubing inspired by Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" video. "We consider this space something between a gallery and a store and a playhouse for our vision," Mr. Moxham said.

HP Omni 120-1024

Browsing through the all-in-one desktops at any computer retailer, it's easy to be wowed by entertainment options and touch-friendly features, but forget about finding a fully decked-out system for less than $800. The HP Omni 120-1024 ($529.99 list) may not have all the bells and whistles of more expensive systems, but if you want a compact and attractive all-in-one for browsing the Web or light office work, it's a decent system at a price that's hard to beat.

Design and Features
Instead of the pedestal design used on previous iterations, the HP Omni utilizes an easel-back design. The screen and chassis are supported by a single bar and a hinged leg in the back, resulting in both sturdiness and some tilt adjustability. The screen bezel and chassis are covered in burnished black plastic, but the supporting bar below is a stately silvery color. The speakers along the bottom edge of the screen provided good stereo output when I played the new Avengers and Mission: Impossible trailers, though I found the sound a little thin when I listened to some Jimi Hendrix songs with the volume turned all the way up. There's also little to no bass to speak of.

The 20-inch widescreen display has a resolution of 1,600 by 900, fine for 720p playback but short of the 1080p HD picture found on the Dell Inspiron One 2305 (IO2305-4400ELS) ($799.95 list, 3 stars). The display is clear enough for any sort of document or spreadsheet work, and large enough for working on documents side by side or enjoying a full-screen movie from four or five feet away. And though it may sit on the shelf next to several touchscreen-equipped all-in-one systems, the Omni 120-1024 has no touch capability itself. The included wired keyboard and mouse are nothing fancy, but they get the job done.

On the right and left edges of the chassis you'll find a tray-loading DVD?RW optical drive, a media card reader (SD/HC, MMC, MS/Pro, xD), two USB 2.0 ports, and headphone and microphone jacks. On the rear are four more USB 2.0 ports, though you'll need two for the keyboard and mouse. There's also an audio output and an Ethernet port. What you won't find on the Omni are faster USB 3.0 ports, like the ones found on the MSI Wind Top AE2050-008US ($679.99 list, 3 stars) or an HDMI video port.

Internally, the Omni 120-1024 is equipped with 802.11n Wi-Fi and a 500GB 7,200rpm hard drive. On the hard drive there are several programs preinstalled, from a dedicated eBay website link on the desktop to ereaders (Blio and Kobo) and a handful of game samples from WildTangent. There's also a 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security 2012, Microsoft Office Starter 2010 (the full suite is preloaded, but requires a product key to activate). You'll also get HP LinkUp software, which lets this computer easily share files with any other on your home network.

Performance
HP Omni 120-1024 The HP Omni 120-1024 is equipped with 4GB of RAM and AMD's latest Fusion Accelerated Processing Unit (APU), a single chip die shared by a dual-core E-450 (1.65GHz) processor and Radeon HD 6320 graphics processor. This approach allows for better graphics than might be offered with traditional integrated solutions, while conserving space and energy. In CineBench R11.5 the Omni 120-1024 scored 0.64, outpacing the 0.62 of the MSI Wind Top AE2050-008US and the 0.50 of the Intel Atom-equipped Acer Veriton Z290G-UD525W ($599 list, 3 stars), but falling far behind every competitor equipped with an Intel Core CPU.

The weak processor also led to slow performance in Handbrake and Photoshop CS5 multimedia tests. The Omni 120-1024 completed Handbrake in 6 minutes 30 seconds, and Photoshop in 14:24. To provide some context, the Sony VAIO VPC-L231FX/W ($999.99 list, 4.5 stars) completed those same tests in about one-third the time (Handbrake 2:22, Photoshop 5:34)?and it's far from the fastest system we've reviewed.

The AMD Radeon HD 6320 didn't help out much in the graphics department. The HP completed 3DMark 11 with a score of 548 at Entry settings, and was unable to run any of our graphics or gaming tests. Don't plan on playing much more than casual or Web-based Flash titles on this all-in-one.

The HP Omni 120-1024 offers buyers a compact and stylish all-in-one at a budget-friendly price. It's a no-muss, no fuss way to browse the Web and edit documents, but not ideal for much beyond day-to-day applications. For a more capable all-in-one, the Editors' Choice HP TouchSmart 320-1030 ($699 street, 4 stars) comes equipped with a more powerful AMD A4 desktop APU, and costs only $130 more.

Two New iPad Models Expected Next Year - Business Insider

Apple may have plans to introduce two new iPad models early next year, according to DigiTimes.

That's in addition to keeping the current iPad 2 around at a price that will be competitive with Amazon's $199 Kindle Fire.

So if this report is to believed, you can expect three iPad models to be available next year at the high, mid, and entry-level ranges.

That's tough to swallow. Here's why:

First, DigiTimes says the new iPads will be introduced at an event called iWorld on January 26, 2012. That's an event for and by Apple fans, not an official Apple event.

Also, there's no reason why Apple's suppliers would know of Apple's plans for such an event, if any.

Finally, the report makes no mention as to what will differentiate the two new iPad models. You can speculate that it may include some combination of a Retina Display, faster processor, and more storage, but that seems unlikely.

Today's new DigiTimes report does backtrack on an earlier one stating that Apple plans to introduce a 7-inch iPad. Many analysts called that rumor bogus because of Steve Jobs' well-known aversion to smaller tablets. The two new models mentioned will both have the same 9.7-inch screen size as the current iPad 2.

It's also worth noting that DigiTimes' sources say the new iPad will be powered by a quad-core A6 processor. That will put it ahead of most other tablets out there when it comes to processing power.

Our bet is that Apple keeps the iPad 2 around next year at a cheaper price and sells the new one at the current price structure.

Colder weather arrives in South Florida Tuesday night

Thanks to a cold front, South Florida should enjoy cooler drier air this week, starting with temperatures dipping into the 50s by late Tuesday night.

Tuesday?s forecast otherwise calls for partly sunny skies and breezy conditions with afternoon highs in the low 80s. There is a 40 percent chance of rain.

On Wednesday, afternoon temperatures should only reach the low 70s, while nighttime readings are forecast to drop into the upper 40s and low 50s.

It won?t be the arctic blast many are hoping for, but it should be beautiful weather nonetheless.

The rest of the week, through New Year?s Day, also should be pleasant with lots of sun, mild afternoons and cool evenings.

Cops: Someone took missing Maine toddler

A 20-month-old girl who vanished a week before Christmas after being put to bed in her father's home was taken away and didn't walk out on her own, investigators said Monday as they announced the largest reward ever offered in the state to help find a missing person.

It marked the first time since the search for Ayla Reynolds began that police have directly said they don't believe she left the house by herself.

"At this point in the investigation ... we are confident that Ayla did not walk out of the house by herself," Waterville police Chief Joseph Massey said at a news conference at which he announced a $30,000 reward was being offered for help finding her. "We believe that someone was involved in taking her out of the house, and that's where the focus of this investigation has turned."

The reward, gathered with donations from residents and businesses in the Waterville area, is the biggest ever offered in Maine for a missing person, state Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said.

Massey said the developments in a mystery that's been featured on national television programs have not shifted the matter from a missing-person case to a criminal investigation. Despite the passing of the Christmas holiday with no sign of Ayla, police remain committed to finding her, the chief said.

"The intensity of the investigation is as high today as it was the first day," he said. "We continue to employ every single resource we have."

Massey was joined at the news conference by Waterville attorney John Nale, who appealed for the safe return of Ayla.

"I ask and I plead with the person or persons who have Ayla Reynolds that they please keep her safe and return her safely to us," Nale said.

Hundreds of police officers, game wardens and local residents have been searching for Ayla since she was reported missing by her father, Justin DiPietro, on the morning of Dec. 17. Massey said a report about the case on the Fox network television program "America's Most Wanted" during the weekend generated some leads, which are being checked by police.

DiPietro told investigators he last saw Ayla when he put her to bed the night before at his home in Waterville, a city of 16,000 residents about 20 miles north of the state capital, Augusta. He said she was wearing polka dot pajamas with the words "Daddy's Princess" on them and had a cast on her broken left arm.

Ayla ended up with her father after child welfare workers intervened while her mother, Trista Reynolds, checked herself into a 10-day rehabilitation program.

Reynolds, who completed the rehab, had filed court papers that she said she hoped would lead to the return of her daughter. The filing came the day before Ayla was last seen.

DiPietro has said he has "no idea what happened to Ayla or who is responsible." He said last week his family and friends would do "everything we can to assist in this investigation and get Ayla back home."
