Cincinnati beats Vanderbilt 31-24 in Liberty Bowl (AP)

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ? Isaiah Pead ran for 149 yards and a touchdown, and Ralph David Abernathy IV's 90-yard kickoff return early in the fourth quarter put Cincinnati ahead to stay as the Bearcats edged Vanderbilt 31-24 on Saturday in the Liberty Bowl.

The Bearcats (10-3) capped the season with their third straight victory.

But the co-Big East Conference champs had to work to put away Vanderbilt (6-7), a team that tied for fourth in the Southeastern Conference, despite forcing three turnovers and coming up with two sacks. The Commodores led 21-17 when Abernathy became the first Cincinnati player to return a kickoff for a TD in the program's 13 bowl appearances.

Vandy's Archibald Barnes blocked Tony Miliano's 39-yard field goal with 3:58 left, giving the Commodores the ball with plenty of time to go ahead. Nick Temple picked off a Larry Smith pass with 3:15 remaining, and Pead sealed the victory with a 12-yard TD run with 1:52 left.

Pead was the game's MVP.

Vanderbilt kicked a 35-yard field goal with 35 seconds left, but the Bearcats recovered the onside kick to kneel down for the victory.

Abernathy is the grandson of the civil rights leader who was in Memphis with Martin Luther King when he was assassinated in 1968.

George Winn also scored on a 69-yard TD run when he replaced Pead, while the Big East Offensive Player of the Year fixed a broken chin strap.

Zach Collaros, playing for the first time since breaking his right ankle Nov. 12, threw a touchdown pass but was intercepted twice. He was just 12 of 29 for 80 yards passing, though he moved around well.

Vanderbilt missed notching only its second winning record since 1982 with the loss.

This was only the fifth bowl for the SEC's only private university yet the second in four seasons. But the Commodores had trouble getting their offense going to match a defense that came up with three sacks and two interceptions ? both by Casey Hayward.

Smith replaced Jordan Rodgers at quarterback in the third quarter, and he threw for 142 yards, including a short pass to Chris Boyd that the receiver took 68 yards up the right sideline before pulling up lame and diving into the end zone for a 21-17 lead with 14:03 left that lasted only as long as Abernathy could sprint down field after the kickoff.

The Bearcats led 14-7 at halftime and couldn't take advantage of two Vanderbilt turnovers in the third quarter.

The Commodores first muffed the opening kickoff before Rodgers was intercepted by Camerron Cheatham. Rodgers, the younger brother of NFL Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, didn't play after that. Coach James Franklin turned to Smith, who started the Commodores' Music City Bowl win in 2008.

Smith nearly pulled it off. He drove the Commodores 52 yards with a couple of key passes to set up Jerron Seymour's 5-yard TD run with 3:53 left in the quarter to tie it up at 14-all.

Zac Stacy also ran for a TD.

Year in Review: What Yahoo! readers remember about 2011 (The Newsroom)

Perry in Fort Dodge (Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)

FORT DODGE, Iowa--For weeks, Rick Perry has been everywhere in Iowa, or at least that's how it has felt.

Backed by nearly $4 million in ads, the Texas governor's face has been a ubiquitous presence on television across the state, his voice a constant mainstay on local radio.

"I'm Rick Perry, I'm not ashamed to talk about my faith," he confidently declares in the ads that have been airing almost nonstop in the state since early December.

But when Perry turned up here on Saturday morning, he wasn't the man voters have been seeing on TV. Standing before a crowd of roughly 75 people at Bloomers Coffee Shop, he lacked the confidence and swagger that has defined his long political career in Texas.

Instead, he spoke with an air of uncertainty that captures the state of his campaign, during?what could be a last-ditch effort to save his struggling 2012 presidential campaign.

His Republican rivals have long mastered their stump speeches, repeating variations of the same lines at every stop, but Perry spoke cautiously, his eyes drifting repeatedly away from voters in the room and down to pages of prepared text. Dominating his remarks were attacks on Rick Santorum, who has leaped ahead of Perry in the polls here and is now considered his chief rival for viability here and in contests to come.

"Sen. Santorum is a good man. He's got a great family. I respect him substantially. But we do have differences," Perry said, eying his notes.

Echoing a line of attack he unveiled just two days ago, Perry argued that Santorum is a creature of a Washington whose record isn't as conservative as he suggests.

"If you want to truly overhaul Washington, D.C., we can't do that with a senator who has voted to raise the debt ceiling eight different times, allowing our debt to grow from $4.1 trillion to $9 trillion on his watch," Perry said, turning to his next page of text. "That's so much debt, it exceeds what President Obama has done in the White House."

"And what's so important?" Perry paused, glancing at his text. "I've gotta ask Rick, 'What was so important that it compelled you to add greater debt to our children's charge card?'"

West Virginia Football: Garrison's knee injury gives steady Alston more carries

Chris O'Meara/Associated Press

West Virginia running back Dustin Garrison suffered a knee injury at practice Friday in Miami Shores, Fla., and will miss the Orange Bowl Wednesday against Clemson.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- One bad plant.

That's all it took for Dustin Garrison's left knee to buckle, and the ligaments to give way.

Late in practice Friday, West Virginia's top running back tore his anterior cruciate ligament and sprained his medial collateral ligament in a non-contact drill, explained the team trainer.

Shawne Alston will start at running back in his place Wednesday in the Orange Bowl against Clemson (10-3), coach Dana Holgorsen announced Sunday. Garrison's loss also opens the door for freshman Andrew Buie.

"It's disappointing not having Dustin," said Holgorsen in his first interview with reporters since Friday. "I tell ya, if we would've gave him the ball more through the course of the year he'd probably be a 1,000-yard rusher if we'd given him the ball more. It's disappointing he's not going to be in the game."

Alston, who has averaged 33.9 rushing yards a game and scored 10 touchdowns, has been a consistent player.

Buie, who missed three games with injuries, has averaged just 12.7 yards a game and with fewer opportunities.

He struggled with ball security early on, but has better straightaway speed than both.

"Obviously there's some things that Dustin did better than some of the other guys," running backs coach Robert Gillespie said. "But as a whole we're still going to do what we've been doing. [Buie] is a kid that we have a lot of confidence in. He worked his way up the depth chart coming out of fall camp. It's his time to make plays and we're confident that he will."

The injury to Garrison, said trainer Dave Kerns, happened about three-quarters of the way through practice when Garrison was making a run to the left, planted, changed direction and tried to cut back right.

The knee gave way.

"He missed a step, overstepped and the left leg gave way," Kerns said. "We evaluated it here and had huge concern."

Garrison, visibly in pain, seemed to know immediately.

The team confirmed the severity of the ACL injury -- a grade three sprain, which is a tear, explained Kerns.

Surgery has not been scheduled for Garrison, and he will stay with the team, on crutches.

Buie, who is Garrison's roommate in Miami, said he looks forward to the chance.

"This is an opportunity to just go out there and play. I feel like I'm ready to take on the task," he said. "[Coach Gillespie], his biggest thing is trying to keep me relaxed and play the game. Play the game I know how to play since I was little and everything should be all right."

The team's run game has never taken off the way it did Oct. 1 against Bowling Green when Garrison rushed for a freshman-record 291 yards.

For the season the team has averaged just 117.8 rushing yards a game.

Holgorsen said he is looking forward to seeing Buie in an increased role.

"Not having a guy like Dustin is tough. You throw a guy like Buie in there and I can't wait to watch him make some plays," Holgorsen said. "Let's keep in mind that all through fall camp we thought Buie was a little better. He just got hurt. He's a good quality player."

His teammates also seem to have faith.

"Dustin's a remarkable player and has come in as a true freshman and been able to produce for us, but we've got guys like Shawne Alston and Andrew Buie who'll definitely be able to pick up any type of slack," defensive tackle Julian Miller said. "Andrew Buie is a guy we have faith in. He's almost like Garrison but hasn't had as many snaps. [I'm] definitely looking forward to those guys getting after it."

"Synthetic" pot use spikes in U.S. military

(AP)?

SAN DIEGO - U.S. troops are increasingly using an easy-to-get herbal mix called "Spice," which mimics a marijuana high, is hard to detect and can bring on hallucinations that last for days.

The abuse of the drug has so alarmed military officials that they've launched an aggressive testing program that this year has led to the investigation of more than 1,100 suspected users, according to military figures.

So-called "synthetic" pot is readily available on the Internet and has become popular nationwide in recent years, but its use among troops and sailors has raised concerns among the Pentagon brass.

Dangerous synthetic drugs gaining popularity

"You can just imagine the work that we do in a military environment," said Mark Ridley, deputy director of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, adding, "you need to be in your right mind when you do a job. That's why the Navy has always taken a zero tolerance policy toward drugs."

Two years ago, only 29 Marines and sailors were investigated for Spice. This year, the number topped 700, the investigative service said. Those found guilty of using Spice are kicked out, although the Navy does not track the overall number of dismissals.

The Air Force has punished 497 airmen so far this year, compared to last year's 380, according to figures provided by the Pentagon. The Army does not track Spice investigations but says it has medically treated 119 soldiers for the synthetic drug in total.

Military officials emphasize those caught represent a tiny fraction of all service members and note none was in a leadership position or believed high while on duty.

Spice is made up of exotic plants from Asia like Blue Lotus and Bay Bean. Their leaves are coated with chemicals that mimic the effects of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, but are five to 200 times more potent.

More than 40 states have banned some of its chemicals, prompting sellers to turn to the Internet, where it is marketed as incense or potpourri. In some states, Spice is sold at bars, smoke shops and convenience stores. The packets usually say the ingredients are not for human consumption but also tout them as "mood enhancing."

Service members preferred it because up until this year there was no way to detect it with urine tests. A test was developed after the Drug Enforcement Administration put a one-year emergency ban on five chemicals found in the drug.

Manufacturers are adapting to avoid detection, even on the new tests, and skirt new laws banning the main chemicals.

"It's a moving target," said Capt. J.A. "Cappy" Surette, spokesman for the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.

The military can calibrate its equipment to test for those five banned chemicals "but underground chemists can keep altering the properties and make up to more than 100 permutations," Surette said.

Complicating their efforts further, there are more than 200 other chemicals used in the drug. They remain legal and their effects on the mind and body remain largely unknown, Navy doctors say.

A Clemson University created many of the chemicals for research purposes in 1990s. They were never tested on humans.

Civilian deaths have been reported and emergency crews have responded to calls of "hyper-excited" people doing things like tearing off their clothes and running down the street naked.

Navy investigators compare the drug to angel dust because no two batches are the same. Some may just feel a euphoric buzz, but others have suffered delusions lasting up to a week.

While the problem has surfaced in all branches of the military, the Navy has been the most aggressive in drawing attention to the problem.

It produced a video based on cases to warn sailors of the drug's dangers and publicized busts of crew members on some of its most-storied ships, including the USS Carl Vinson, from which Osama bin Laden's was dropped into the sea.

Two of the largest busts this year involved sailors in the San Diego-based U.S. Third Fleet, which announced last month that it planned to dismiss 28 sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan.

A month earlier, 64 sailors, including 49 from the Vinson, were accused of being involved in a Spice ring.

Many of the cases were discovered after one person was caught with the drug, prompting broader investigations.

Lt. Commander Donald Hurst, a fourth-year psychiatry resident at San Diego's Naval Medical Center, said the hospital is believed to have seen more cases than any other health facility in the country.

In this Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011 photo, Lt. Commander Donald Hurst, a fourth-year psychiatry resident at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, poses for a portrait at the hospital, in San Diego.

Doctors saw users experiencing bad reactions once a month, but now see them weekly. Users suffer everything from vomiting, elevated blood pressure and seizures to extreme agitation, anxiety and delusions.

Hurst said the behavior in many cases he witnessed at first seemed akin to schizophrenia. Usually within minutes, however, the person became completely lucid. Sometimes, the person goes in and out of such episodes for days.

He recalled one especially bizarre case of a sailor who came in with his sobbing wife.

"He stood their holding a sandwich in front of him with no clue as to what to do," he said. "He opened it up, looked at it, touched it. I took it and folded it over and then he took a bite out it. But then we had to tell him, `you have to chew."'

An hour later when Hurst went back to evaluate him, he was completely normal and worried about being in trouble.

"That's something you don't see with acute schizophrenic patients," he said. "Then we found out based on the numbers of people coming in like this, that OK there's a new drug out there."

Hurst decided to study 10 cases. Some also had smoked marijuana or drank alcohol, while others only smoked Spice.

Of the 10, nine had lost a sense of reality. Seven babbled incoherently. The symptoms for seven of them lasted four to eight days. Three are believed to now be schizophrenic. Hurst believed the drug may have triggered the symptoms in people with that genetic disposition. His findings were published in the American Journal of Psychiatry in October.

He said there are countless questions that still need answering, including the drug's effects on people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or traumatic brain injuries.

What the research has confirmed, he said, is: "These are not drugs to mess with."

Taylor Kinney and Lady Gaga Step Out, Go Public

Lady Gaga's officially going public with boyfriend Taylor Kinney.

With a series of just-released photos in which she makes no attempt to hide her affection, the 25-year-old is finally acknowledging what we've known for months: She and The Vampire Diaries' Taylor Kinney are an item, and a cute one at that.

Sources say they're taking it slow, but definitely going strong.

Taylor Kinney ImageLady Gaga in Japan

Gaga, who first met Kinney on the set of her "You and I" music video (below) when he starred as her love interest and makeout partner, casually slung her arm over her boyfriend's shoulder as they strolled along a California beach.

While the pair appear cozy and are getting along fabulously, a source close to Gaga insists they're not super serious - mostly because of the strains of her career.

"They're hooking up and getting to know each other," explains the insider. "Gaga can't be too committed because she works 24/7. But she thinks he's the best!"

Good to hear. Let's just hope they make time for each other!

Snapseed

Instagram (Free, 3.0 stars) and Hipstamatic ($1.99, 3.0 stars) aren't the only ones in on the iOS photo fun game. Nik Software is a far more venerable player than either of those, having made pro-level effects for Photoshop for years. The company's relatively new Snapseed can not only add zest or interest to images shot with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch camera, but also share it on Flickr, Facebook, or Twitter. Not only doe's Nik's years of image-editing prowess shine in Snapseed, but the app's interface takes good advantage of the iPhone's touch screen. The one downside?its $4.99 price tag is more than you pay for most iPhone apps.

Interface
Snapseed's interface is simple and clear, yet punches a lot of powerful and detailed capabilities. After you open or shoot a photo, you'll see rectangles along the bottom of the screen (or along the side if you're in landscape orientation), which you can swipe through to choose edits, adjustments, and effects. Simple swiping gestures let you adjust contrast, brightness, and color, or you can have the program choose those automatically or choose control points in the image.

An icon is always present that lets you compare your work with the original, and the original image is always saved?the editor is non-destructive of your original image. A question mark is always available in the upper-right hand corner, and touching it overlays helpful hand-drawn instructions showing where to tap or swipe to perform a function.

Related Story Also see our Best 50 iPhone Apps

The app adroitly handles photo-fixing basics such as brightness, contrast, cropping and straightening. And its sharpening capability, accessible from the Details option, Nik borrows from its pro-level Photoshop plugin, Sharpener Pro 3.0, even letting you adjust with sliders for strength and "structure." This provides a powerful way to bring out hidden textures.

Special effects include Drama, Grunge, vintage, center focus, frames, and "tilt shift"--a popular technique that gives photos a miniaturized look. These go far beyond what you get in Instagram and Hipstamatic. I was also impressed that many of the adjustments and effects can be applied to specific areas of the image using control points.

The Drama tool added just that to a bleak looking landscape I tried it on, while Vintage offers nine old-photo looks and several texture options. Grunge is one of Snapseed's most impressive tools, with a whopping 1500 settings, each a different degrees of color emphasis or fading. Once you're done with tweaking the actual image, you can place it in a choice of frames that give the photo a mounted appearance.

Snapseed offers one of the hottest effects in digital photography today?"tilt shift." I use quotation marks, because, although this is the popular term for the miniaturization and saturation technique, tilt-shift is actually a geometry effect only possible with expensive lenses. Snapseed lets you choose an elliptical or linear focus area for the effect, and the results can be impressive.

Sharing
Snapseed lets you share your photo creations directly to your iPhone library, send it in an email, or upload it to Flickr, Facebook, or Twitter. When I uploaded to Flickr, I could choose the photo set and privacy setting, and add a caption, tags, description. Hipstamatic, by contrast, only lets you use a title and its own auto tags, as does Instagram.

More than Speedy Snapping
Instagram and Hipstamatic certainly offer fun ways to doll up your photos, but Snapseed is the most capable, powerful. Some of its capabilities approach things you can to in the Grand Poobah of image editing itself, Photoshop. If you just want to have fun and want another way to share besides the well-established Flickr and Facebook (and good ole email), the two feted upstarts are for you. But if you really want to perfect and create with your iPhone photographs, then Snapseed is the best choice.
