Alaska officials halt search for Japanese climbers

In this Friday, June 15, 2012 photo provided by the National Park Service, climbers hike through the area where an avalanche swept a Japanese climbing team off a hill during their descent from Alaska's Mount McKinley. U.S. National Park Service officials say five people were traveling as a one rope team early Thursday morning as part of a Miyagi Workers Alpine Federation expedition on the Alaska mountain. The NPS said Hitoshi Ogi, 69, survived after falling 60 feet (18 meters) into a crevasse. He was able to climb out. The other four tumbled into the avalanche debris and haven't been seen since. (AP) ? The search for four Japanese climbers who were caught in an avalanche on Alaska's Mount McKinley has been called off, with authorities calling the site their final resting place.

The National Park Service said Sunday that a shallow avalanche on the mountain may not have killed the climbers, but the slide pushed them into a crevasse more than 100 feet deep.

The search for them was permanently suspended after a mountaineering ranger found the climbing rope in debris at the bottom of the crevasse, spokeswoman Kris Fister said Sunday from Talkeetna.

"We believe this is their final resting place," Fister said.

The four were identified as Yoshiaki Kato, 64, Masako Suda, 50, Michiko Suzuki 56, and 63-year-old Tamao Suzuki, 63.

The avalanche early Wednesday morning also pushed Hitoshi Ogi, 69, into the crevasse. Ogi climbed 60 feet out of the crevasse and reached a base camp Thursday afternoon.

Ogi had been attached to the other members of the team by climbing rope as they descended in an avalanche-prone section of the West Buttress Route. The rope broke in the avalanche and fall.

The group was on a section known as Motorcycle Hill at about 11,800 feet, which has a 35-degee slope. Climbers who take a required briefing on the mountain are warned of the avalanche danger there.

"This is the first time there have been fatalities," Fister said.

The avalanche likely was set up by new snow falling on rock or hardened snow and ice, Fister said. No climber reached the summit between June 8 and the day of the fall five days later because of falling snow and wind that limited visibility, Fister said.

The avalanche measured 200 feet wide and 800 feet top to bottom, Fisher said. It created a snow pile averaging only 3-4 feet deep.

A 10-person ground crew searched for the climbers Saturday and at first concentrated on the avalanche debris. The patrol included a rescue dog and a handler. Probes turned up no sign of the missing climbers.

"We weren't certain originally," Fister said. "That's why we were probing through the snowfield itself. Then when we had the chance to go further into the same crevasse that he (Ogi) had fallen into, they started going further in, probing. Again, there was a lot of ice debris that had fallen into it."

Park Service mountaineering ranger Tucker Chenoweth found a grim sign of the doomed climbing team in the crevasse. Ogi had emerged from the crevasse with much of his gear missing, and Chenoweth spotted equipment as he descended. At 100 feet down, he dug through ice debris and spotted rope.

It matched about 60 feet of rope that remained attached to Ogi, and which he had carried with him on his descent from the crevasse to the base camp.

Chenoweth continued to dig, hoping to reach the other roped-in climbers, but found the going difficult through the compacted ice and snow debris.

The danger of falling ice made it too dangerous to continue an attempt to recover bodies, Fister said.

All the climbers were members of the Japanese alpine club Miyagi Workers Alpine Federation.

Ogi suffered a minor hand injury, according to the Park Service. He was flown off the mountain Thursday.

The deaths bring to six the number of fatalities on the mountain during the summer climbing season.

Since 1932, 120 people have died on the mountain. A dozen died in avalanches.

Park Service spokeswoman Maureen McLaughlin said by phone from Talkeetna that the Japanese climbers bring to 44 the number of bodies that remain on North America's tallest mountain. Some, she said, were in similar circumstances where it was too dangerous to mount a recovery effort. Others have never been found.

Based on everything we've seen so far (namely, one teaser trailer), Katy Perry's "Wide Awake" video takes the fairy tale concept to new heights, putting Perry inside a fantastical world and very literally closing the book on her Teenage Dream run.

And while we won't get to see the full video until Tuesday (June 19) night — when it premieres at 7:53 p.m. ET on MTV as part of "MTV First: Katy Perry" — we've got another exclusive sneak peek for you today, one that shows the dark side of the usually sunny California Gurl.

Check out another pic at MTV's Buzzworthy blog!

In this new still from the video, a black-clad Katy (with noir-ish hair to match) clutches a lantern as she makes her way through what appears to be a labyrinth ... though we're still not sure where she's going or who she's searching for. But it bears mention that she looks fantastic — and kinda spooky — while doing it.

We won't know the full story until Tuesday, when Perry reveals the final chapter in the Teenage Dream story. It's certainly been a fairy tale up to this point, but will she get her happy ending? Tune in to find out.

Check out another pic at MTV's Style blog!

The "Wide Awake" video makes its worldwide debut on MTV Tuesday, June 19, at 7:53 p.m. ET as part of "MTV First: Katy Perry," with an exclusive 30-minute interview with Katy and MTV's Sway Calloway to follow on MTV.com. 'Major' Microsoft announcement

(AP) ? Microsoft is expected to make a "major" announcement Monday. Speculation about the Los Angeles media event is that the company plans to unveil either a tablet computer or a system that uses an upcoming version of Windows to help people access TV shows and movies across a range of devices.

A Microsoft-branded tablet wouldn't come as a complete surprise. In April, Microsoft announced a $300 million, 17.6 percent stake in Barnes & Noble's Nook e-book business.

Microsoft Corp.'s next operating system, Windows 8, is designed to run desktop, laptop and tablet computers. PC makers are hoping it offers them a better chance to compete with Apple Inc.'s iPad. Windows 8 is expected to be released in September or October, in time for devices that ship for the holiday season.

"This will be a major Microsoft announcement ? you will not want to miss it," the company said in an email invite to the media on Thursday. A company spokesman declined to comment further.

The event, set to start at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time, is being kept under such tight wraps that the company has declined to provide its location until Monday.

Greeks go to polls in vote that could shake world

Yannis Behrakis / REUTERS

A Greek orthodox priest holds his ballot paper as he exits a voting booth at an Athens primary school used as a polling station on Sunday.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 12:51 p.m. ET: ATHENS - With the eyes of the world upon them, voters in Greece went to the polls on Sunday in an election that could determine whether the heavily indebted country remains in the euro zone.

A joint exit poll by five pollsters, published as voting closed on Sunday, showed New Democracy taking between 27.5 percent and 30.5 percent of the vote. Syriza was essentially even with 27 percent to 30 percent, followed by the PASOK Socialists taking 10 percent to 12 percent.

Syriza has vowed to tear up the terms of an EU/IMF bailout package keeping Greece from bankruptcy, potentially sending the country crashing out of Europe's single currency. New Democracy broadly backs the bailout, as does PASOK.

The party that comes in first secures a dividend of 50 parliamentary seats which will be crucial to its chances of forming a new government.

"Europe may be able to muddle through but the risk is rising. There could be a Lehman's moment if things are not properly handled," Robert Zoellick, the outgoing head of the World Bank,? told Britain's Observer newspaper.

The bankruptcy of U.S. bank Lehman Brothers in September 2008 triggered a global financial slump that indebted western nations are still struggling to recover from.?

Greek vote to keep tensions high on Wall Street

Sunday's election is a re-run of an earlier vote on May 6?that produced no clear winner and forced Greeks back to the polls. The vote is?seen by many as a referendum on the future of the single currency in Europe.?

"Things are getting worse and worse in Greece. There is no future for the next few years there," says Christos Christoglou, a Greek inspection engineer, who moved to Germany to find work.

The last opinion polls published before a two-week pre-election ban showed the radical Syriza party running neck-and-neck with the conservative New Democracy party of Antonis Samaras. But no party is likely to win enough votes to form a government on its own, meaning a coalition will have to be formed to avoid yet another election.

'Most important election in history'
The ongoing uncertainty was a prime concern for Greek psychologist Sofia Arvanici, who spoke to NBC News at a polling station in a northern suburb of Athens.?

"This is Greece's most important election in history," the 36-year-old said. "We don't know whether we will have a government tomorrow, but we can't have more instability. "

The European Union and International Monetary Fund have insisted that the conditions of the 130 billion euro bailout accord agreed in March must be accepted fully by a new government or funds will be cut off, driving Greece into bankruptcy.

Opinion polls show Greeks, weary after five years of deep recession, overwhelmingly favor remaining in the euro. But there is bitter anger over the repeated rounds of tax hikes, slashed spending and sharp cuts in wages.

"I voted with a heavy heart for a pro-bailout party because I want the country to stay in the euro, with the help of our European partners. I don't think the failed recipes of the left would get us out of this mess," Stratos Economou, 49, who runs a bakery shop in Athens, told Reuters.?

Germans on edge as key Greek vote nears

Zoellick and other policy makers insist that the austerity Greece is living with is preferable to the alternative.?

The Observer said the Zoellick would tell?a G-20 summit that the euro crisis could hit developing nations?hard, although clearly the effects would be felt further afield. ?

"Uncertainty in markets is now starting to increase costs for developing countries," he told the newspaper. "The ripple effects are making everybody's life harder."?

Watch World News videos on msnbc.com

The?G-20, which brings together finance ministers and central bank governors?from 19 major economies and the European Union, will start a meeting in Mexico on Monday. ?The gathering?in the Pacific resort of Los Cabos promised to be overshadowed by the elections in Greece and mounting worries about Spain and Italy.

"If the radical left wins (in Greece) -- which cannot be ruled out -- the consequences for the currency union are unforeseeable," Jean-Claude Juncker, Luxembourg's prime minister and head of the group of eurozone finance ministers,?told the Austrian newspaper Kurier, according to the Observer. "I can only warn everyone against leaving the currency union. The internal cohesion of the euro zone would be in danger."

Bartering takes hold in austerity-wracked Greece

Finance officials in the euro zone have discussed limiting the size of withdrawals from ATM machines, imposing border checks and introducing euro zone capital controls as a worst-case scenario.

During Sunday's election, voters will choose a new prime minister, but the election is also considered a proxy for a much bigger question: will Greece still use the Euro or not? CNBC's Michelle Caruso-Cabrera reports.

All parties actually say they will keep Greece in the single currency but Alexis Tsipras of the Syriza party believes the agreement can be renegotiated without Greece having to leave, betting that European leaders cannot afford the turmoil that would be unleashed by cutting a member of the euro zone loose.

But euro zone paymaster Germany has warned Greeks on Saturday the bailout would not be renegotiated.

"That's why it's so important that the Greek elections preferably lead to a result in which those that will form a future government say: 'Yes, we will stick to the agreements'," Chancellor Angela Merkel told a party conference of her Christian Democrats

On the right, establishment heir and New Democracy leader Samaras says rejection of the EU/IMF bailout would mean a return to the drachma and even greater economic calamity.

World Bank on Greece: Spain, Italy could be next

Samaras told supporters on Friday they faced a stark choice -- ?"euro versus drachma."

The fate of the euro as well as the European Union itself was top of mind for finance director?Kostas Theoharis, 40, as he cast his vote near Athens.?

"The main scenario is whether the euro will exist. This is the question that needs?answered rather than whether Greece will be part of the euro,"?he told NBC News at an Athens polling station with his son Alex, 6. ?"I fail to see how Greece could leave the euro without breaking up Europe. I understand that this is a financial problem but it needs a political solution."?

Central banks from Tokyo to London are readying arsenals to defend banks and national currencies against any post-election turmoil.?

NBC News' Yuka Tachibana, msnbc.com's F. Brinley Bruton and Reuters contributed to this report.?

Croatians accused of monkey chants at Balotelli

UEFA lays down first formal charges of racism at the European Championship

Image: BalotelliAP

Italy's Mario Balotelli leaves the pitch after being substituted during the Euro 2012 match against Croatia on Thursday.

By GRAHAM DUNBAR

updated 1:26 p.m. ET June 16, 2012

WARSAW, Poland - UEFA made its first formal charges of racism at the European Championship on Saturday, opening a case against the Croatian soccer association after receiving reports that fans made monkey chants at Italy forward Mario Balotelli.

Croatia is charged with "improper conduct" of supporters, including "racist chants, racist symbols" at a game in Poznan on Thursday, the European soccer governing body said in a statement.

UEFA received reports from anti-discrimination monitors working with Football Against Racism in Europe, who wrote that Croatia fans made monkey noises and displayed far-right nationalist flags.

Balotelli, who is black, started the game for Italy against Croatia, and was replaced in the second half of the 1-1 draw.

"It was fairly consistent throughout the game," FARE executive director Piara Powar told The Associated Press. "It was at its most intense as he was substituted and left the field."

The charge also relates to fireworks thrown on the field after Croatia scored, which delayed Italy's kickoff to restart the game.

UEFA said its disciplinary panel will judge the case against Croatia on Tuesday.

The Croatia soccer association (HNS) said it condemned the incident and "distances itself from all deviant behavior on the part of the fans."

Those responsible were "not supporters, but hooligans who should be isolated from all sports events," the Croatian organization said in a statement, appealing to UEFA "not to punish the Croatian national team."

UEFA rules make national associations responsible for their fans' behavior. Punishments range from warnings and a sliding scale of fines to points deductions and even expulsion from Euro 2012.

Four years ago, UEFA fined Croatia about $20,000 for its fans' neo-Nazi flags and chants during a Euro 2008 quarterfinals loss against Turkey in Vienna.

Also in 2008, FIFA fined Croatia $27,700 after England forward Emile Heskey was subjected to racist abuse during a World Cup qualifying match in Zagreb.

UEFA is also studying reports that a banana was thrown toward the field from a section housing Croatia fans.

Balotelli has been the target of reported abuse at both Italy matches at Euro 2012.

UEFA is investigating claims by a Spanish fans' group that some Spain followers made monkey chants at him during a Group C match last Sunday in Gdansk.

In a separate investigation, UEFA is seeking evidence to support claims that Russian fans made monkey noises at Czech Republic defender Theodor Gebre Selassie in Wroclaw.

UEFA pledged zero tolerance of racism in Poland and Ukraine during the three-week tournament.
