14 mutilated corpses found in Mexican city

Jorge Castaneda, former Mexican foreign minister and NBC News Latin America policy expert, talks about the latest developments in Mexico's drug war where this week 49 mutilated bodies were found near the U.S. border.

By Reuters

Fourteen mutilated corpses and a threatening message aimed at a drug cartel were found inside a truck in the parking lot of a supermarket in a northern Mexico city, local media reported on Saturday.

Mexico's attorney general's office could not immediately confirm the reports of the grisly discovery in Mante and police officials in the crime-ridden city were not immediately available for comment.

Mexican media said the body parts belonged to 10 men and four women and the message was directed at the Gulf cartel.

In a separate incident on June 7, 14 dismembered bodies were discovered inside a truck in Mante, located in the south of Tamaulipas state, which borders Texas and is one of the bloodiest battlegrounds in Mexico's drug war.

More than 55,000 people have been killed in the conflict since President Felipe Calderon sent in the army to fight drug gangs shortly after he took office in December 2006.

Calderon's conservative National Action Party, or PAN, appears likely to lose power in the presidential election on July 1, due partly to rising frustration with the drug-related violence.

This week, Mexico was left red-faced after authorities admitted they had mistakenly claimed to have captured a son of the country's most-wanted man, drug lord Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman.

Wisch: Playoff Is Coming, Now Give College Football A New Name

By Dave Wischnowsky ?

(CBS) So, major college football is finally getting a playoff.

Now, can it get a new name, too?

Or, actually, how about we just revert back to the old one? eh?

On Thursday, news broke that the BCS commissioners are now backing a playoff plan that would involve the sites for the national semifinals to rotate among the major bowl games and would include a selection committee to pick the teams.

The proposal will be presented to university presidents next week for approval, and once they sign off (they?re expected to) major college football?s champ will be decided by a four-team playoff beginning in 2014.

All of this makes me wonder if we?ll soon start calling the nation?s fifth- and sixth-ranked schools ?bubble teams? and are about to spawn a new breed of pigskin bracketologists. But, mainly, it makes me wonder what we?ll be calling major college football itself.

Because we can?t exactly stick with the status quo.

Until 2007, as you might recall, major college football was referred to as Division I-A (?One-A?), while the next tier of football-playing schools were referred to as I-AA (?One-Double-A?).

It was simple, it was snappy and it was perfectly clear.

But then, just like they so often do, the wonks running college athletics had to go and muck things up.

In ?07, in an effort to apparently make the smaller schools feel less like second-class institutions ? did, say, Harvard, Princeton and Yale really ever feel that way? ? the NCAA brain trust decreed that Division I football would now be split into the Football Bowl Subdivision (I-A, which uses bowl games as its postseason) and the Football Championship Subdivision (I-AA, which uses a playoff system for its postseason and crowns a true tournament champion).

And with that, we had the awkward acronyms ?FBS? and ?FCS? forced upon us as replacements for the simple ?I-A? and ?I-AA,? which ? much like calling Willis Tower the Sears Tower ? I still prefer to use.

I never understood what changing the names really accomplished, anyway, as I don?t believe football players have such fragile psyches that they were breaking down in tears at being called ?I-AA.? If that?s true, then how do those poor Division III kids carry on at all?

I also am quite certain that sports fans aren?t so gullible that they suddenly thought that ?FCS? meant a higher caliber of football.

It doesn?t.

But, as Associated Press college football writer Ralph D. Russo ? his tongue firmly in cheek ? put it before Week 1 of the 2007 season: ?? When Louisville beats Murray State by about 40 Thursday night, remember the Cardinals aren?t playing a I-AA team, they?re playing an FCS team.?

My hope is that come 2014, when all classes of college football will employ some type of playoff format. that the NCAA will simply revert to its I-A and I-AA classifications. However, since college sports? governing body has already deemed ?I-AA? to be a supposed ?second-class? label, I fear that it will not.

And, if that?s the case, then who knows what the NCAA will come up with. Heck, if the Big Ten has any say, we?ll probably be stuck the ?Football Legends Series? and ?Football Leaders Series,? and we?ll just call both ?FLS.?

Since, you know, nobody could keep them straight anyway.

On Thursday, Bill Connelly a writer at SBnation.com published a piece about college football playoffs and also asked, ?Can we just move back to 1-A and 1-AA please??

Now, it actually was never was 1-A and 1-AA ? with numerals. But, hey, perhaps using numbers is different enough from that oh-so-demeaning ?I-AA? for the NCAA leaders to give it a green light.

I?m not sure that we can count on them to do better.

(AP) ? For years, the children Jerry Sandusky had preyed upon kept quiet about what the former Penn State assistant football coach did to them in echoing shower stalls, empty hotel rooms and the muffled confines of his basement bedroom.

Late Friday, after a swift trial and less than two days of deliberations, a jury issued an emphatic verdict: Sandusky was guilty on 45 counts of sexual abuse, meaning the man once considered a successor to coach Joe Paterno will likely die in prison.

The verdict is not the end of the scandal that took down Paterno and deeply shook the state's most prominent university. It will play out for years in courtrooms and through a set of ongoing investigations.

But the trial did present one piece of finality: Sandusky was taken away in handcuffs to the county jail. Sentencing will be in about three months, but mandatory minimums will keep him behind bars for life.

"One of the recurring themes in this case was, 'Who would believe a kid?'" Attorney General Linda Kelly said. "The answer is, we in Bellefonte, Pa., would believe a kid."

Sandusky, a retired defensive coach, showed little emotion as the verdict was read, giving his wife, Dottie, and family members a half-wave as the county sheriff led him away.

There were only three acquittals among the charges related to 10 victims, eight of whom took the stand to describe fondling, forced oral sex and anal rape. Many of the accusers testified that they had told no one of the abuse that dated as far back as the mid-1990s ? not parents, not girlfriends and not police.

The accuser known in court papers as Victim 6, whose mother alerted authorities in 1998 after Sandusky took her son into a shower, broke down in tears upon hearing the verdicts in the courtroom. Afterward, a prosecutor embraced him and said, "Did I ever lie to you?"

The man, now 25, testified that Sandusky called himself the "tickle monster" in a shower assault. He declined to comment to a reporter afterward. His mother said: "Nobody wins. We've all lost."

One of the three counts for which Sandusky was acquitted concerned Victim 6, an indecent assault charge. The man testified that Sandusky had given him a bear hug in the shower but at one point he just "blacked out."

The other acquittals were an indecent assault charge related to Victim 5, who said Sandusky fondled him in the shower, and an involuntary deviate sexual intercourse charge regarding Victim 2, the boy graduate assistant Mike McQueary saw being attacked in a campus shower.

Almost immediately after the judge adjourned, loud cheers could be heard from a couple hundred people gathered outside the courthouse as word quickly spread that Sandusky had been convicted. The crowd included victim advocates and local residents with their kids. Many held up their smartphones to take pictures as people filtered out of the building.

As Sandusky was placed in the cruiser to be taken to jail, someone yelled at him to "rot in hell!" Others hurled insults and he shook his head no in response.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola was interrupted by cheers from the crowd on the courthouse steps when he said, "The sentence that Jerry will receive will be a life sentence."

In addition to the eight who testified, there were two yet-unidentified victims for whom prosecutors relied on testimony from a university janitor and McQueary, whose account of a sexual encounter between Sandusky and a boy of about 10 years old ultimately led to the Paterno's dismissal and the university president's ouster.

Sandusky did not take the stand in his own defense.

After the verdict was announced, defense attorney Karl Rominger said it was "a tough case" with a lot of charges and that an appeal was certain. He said the defense team "didn't exactly have a lot of time to prepare."

The ex-coach had repeatedly denied the allegations, and his defense suggested that his accusers had a financial motive to make up stories, years after the fact. His attorneys also painted Sandusky as the victim of overzealous police investigators who coached the alleged victims into giving accusatory statements.

One accuser testified that Sandusky molested him in the locker-room showers and in hotels while trying to ensure his silence with gifts and trips to bowl games. He also said Sandusky had sent him "creepy love letters."

Another spoke of forced oral sex and instances of rape in the basement of Sandusky's home, including abuse that left him bleeding. He said he once tried to scream for help, knowing that Sandusky's wife was upstairs, but figured the basement must be soundproof.

Another, a foster child, said Sandusky warned that he would never see his family again if he ever told anyone what happened.

And just hours after the case went to jurors, lawyers for one of Sandusky's six children, Matt, said he had told authorities that his father abused him.

Matt Sandusky had been prepared to testify on behalf of prosecutors, his lawyers said in a statement. The lawyers said they arranged for Matt Sandusky to meet with law enforcement officials but did not explain why he didn't testify.

"This has been an extremely painful experience for Matt and he has asked us to convey his request that the media respect his privacy," the statement said. It didn't go into details about his allegations.

Defense witnesses, including Dottie Sandusky, described Sandusky's philanthropic work with children over the years, and many spoke in positive terms about his reputation in the community. Prosecutors had portrayed those efforts as an effective means by which Sandusky could camouflage his molestation as he targeted boys who were the same age as participants in The Second Mile, a charity he founded in the 1970s for at-risk youth.

Sandusky's arrest in November led the Penn State trustees to fire Paterno as head coach, saying he exhibited a lack of leadership after fielding a report from McQueary. The scandal also led to the ouster of university President Graham Spanier and criminal charges against two university administrators for failing to properly report suspected child abuse and perjury.

The two administrators, athletic director Tim Curley and now-retired vice president Gary Schultz, are fighting the allegations and await trial.

The family of Paterno, who died exactly five months before Sandusky's conviction, released a statement saying: "Although we understand the task of healing is just beginning, today's verdict is an important milestone. The community owes a measure of gratitude to the jurors for their diligent service. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims and their families."

In a statement, Penn State praised the accusers who testified and said that it planned to invite the victims of Sandusky's abuse to participate in a private program to address their concerns and compensate them for claims related to the school.

Sandusky had initially faced 52 counts of sex abuse. Prosecutors dropped one count and the judge tossed three others during the trial, on grounds two were unproven, one was brought under a statute that didn't apply and another was duplicative.

Viewing of Paid Video is shifting from Computers to Tablets and ...

As paid video content becomes more available via different distribution channels, tablet and wireless phone-viewing usage has increased, while PC/Mac-viewing usage has decreased from 2011.

?

The new?2012 U.S. Residential Pay-to-View StudySM by J.D. Power and Associates?provides unique insights concerning attitudes, viewing preferences, behavior patterns, awareness and experiences among pay-to-view customers of the major home television and video service providers in the United States.

The study, now in its second year, found that 18 percent of customers use tablets for viewing paid video content, making them the most-often-used handheld device, up from 11 percent in 2011. Usage by wireless phone customers increases to 16 percent, up from 14 percent in 2011. Overall, 29 percent of video service customers watch paid content on a handheld device. PC/Mac viewing of paid content has declined to 39 percent from 48 percent in 2011. Interestingly, similar trends have been identified amongst UK consumers of catch-up TV by MediaTel (see here)

?Customers are becoming more comfortable viewing their paid content on a smaller screen, such as a tablet or mobile phone,? said Frank Perazzini, director of telecommunications at J.D. Power and Associates. ?The convenience of the device, as well as the availability of the content, has made it much easier to experience video on a variety of devices. However, the desire to watch events and video content as it happens is still prevalent, as more than 50 percent of viewers watch live television programming.?

The study measures customer satisfaction with the pay-to-view service experience across seven factors: performance and reliability; variety of videos/programming provided; ease of use; cost of service; customer service; billing; and offerings and promotions. Overall satisfaction with pay-to-view video service providers averages 750 (on a 1,000-point scale), up from 743 in 2011.

Generation Gap

The study finds a stark difference in the usage and viewing practices of paid content by Gen Y and Baby Boomer1?customers, yet finds a minor difference in their satisfaction levels. For instance, satisfaction with video service providers among Gen Y customers has declined to 752, down 18 points from 2011, while satisfaction among Baby Boomer customers is 748, an increase of 19 points from 2011. Among Gen Y customers, satisfaction has declined in part due to lower ratings for cost of service and customer service, while satisfaction among Baby Boomer customers has increased due to higher ratings for billing, ease of use and variety of videos/programming provided.

?Baby Boomers are more becoming more comfortable with paid video technology and, as a result, are becoming more satisfied with the services available,? said Perazzini. ?Conversely, Gen Y customers are already familiar with the technology and not only demand a high level of service from video service providers, but also are quick to seek alternatives when they believe they could have a better experience elsewhere.?

The study also finds that when selecting a video service provider, 21 percent of Gen Y customers consider mobility a factor, compared with only 9 percent of Baby Boomer customers, further highlighting the different needs of these two generations.

Customers Spend More Time with Gaming Consoles

Nearly one-fourth (23%) of customers view paid content via gaming consoles, compared to those who view paid content via handheld devices (29%). However, customers who view content on a gaming console watch 6.3 hours per week, compared with 5.3 hours on a PC/Mac; 4.9 hours on a wireless phone; 4.5 hours on a music player; and 4.4 hours on a tablet.

?These findings illustrate that while customers appreciate the convenience and value that gaming consoles provide, the TV screen is still a preferred viewing media,? said Perazzini. ?On the other hand, average viewing times for mobile devices and computers are likely impacted by battery life and screen .?

The 2012 U.S. Residential Pay-to-View Study is based on responses from 4,097 U.S. households that evaluated video service providers, including Amazon, Apple TV, Blockbuster/Blockbuster Express, Google TV, Hulu/Hulu Plus, Local Video Stores, Netflix and Redbox. The study was fielded in April 2012.

[1] J.D. Power and Associates defines generational groups as Pre-Boomers (born before 1946); Baby Boomers (1946-1964); Generation X (1965-1976); and Generation Y (1977-1994).
