Once upon a time I bought a roller stand because is had roller-balls on it. Long rollers tend to steer stock and I wanted something for the bandsaw. I found that on heavier material the rollers left patterns of crushed fibers that showed up during the finishing stage despite hand planing and sanding to final dimension. So, I modified it and added casters.
.
.
This worked great.
Every now and then I would be working with material, or end up with spoil, consisting of stock that was thinner than this design is intended for. I have other stands but, I would be too lazy . . . er. . . . I mean 'creatively focused', yeah, that's it . . . creatively focused to stop and swap stands.
I grabbed a piece of scrap 1/4" BB ply and a piece of PVC pipe. I cut a skinny 1/4" slot out of the PVC on the tablesaw and cut the ply to a size that would position the PVC a fat 1/8" below the top of the casters. I just happened to cut the PVC slot small enough to fit nice and tight (read, pounded it on with a dead blow mallet).
.
Now I get the benefit of the casters and have a safety net for the occasional thinner stock/spoil.

What do you do to show love and appreciation for the hard-working individual running the ship at the best damn Android forums anywhere? That's a tough nut to crack. Sure, the higher-ups could shower him with gifts, or cut a check, but as one of the folks who work with him, I agree that we needed a way to tell him that we think he's a hell of a guy. I'm talking about Cory Streater of course, our forums admin, podcast star, and all-around awesome guy.
Anyways, we dreamed up a great idea, and decided to have a t-shirt made to express just how we think and feel, then ship it around so all the moderators and developers could sign it. It took several months to get done, and the shirt traveled almost 8,000 miles before landing at Cory's doorstep. Without the logistic skills of AC Super Moderator Cyber Warrior (NATO should totally hire this guy) it would have never happened. With over 850,000 members, almost 2,000,000 posts, and new registrations flowing in all the time, our forums are just too big and need too many folks working in them to pull this off without some serious dedication, and CW stepped up -- this is where I thank him again!
So anyhoo, I want to take a chance to thank Cory again for all his hard work -- you're a friend as well as a co-worker -- as well as thank everyone involved in the project. I'm blogging it so you folks have a chance to tell Cory thanks for all his hard work as well. He's spent many a night awake and working on the forums long after he should have been in bed, and it shows. It takes more than awesome members to have the best damn Android forums on the Internet, and we're lucky to have Cory at the helm. Feel free to fill the comments with thanks and appreciation, but be sure to visit the forums here to tell him personally!

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The first ambassador to abandon Syrian President Bashar al-Assad called on the army to "turn your guns on the criminals" of the government, as troops backed by tanks swarmed into a suburb of Damascus on Thursday to flush out rebels.
Nawaf al-Fares, who has close ties to the security services, was Syria's ambassador to its neighbor Iraq, one of its few friends in the region.
Coming just days after the desertion of Manna Tlas, a brigadier general in the elite Republican Guard who grew up with the president, his defection gave the anti-Assad uprising one of its biggest boosts in 16 months of bloodshed.
But Syria's strongest ally, Russia, stuck by Assad on Thursday with a clear warning to his Western and Arab enemies that it would not even consider calls for a tough new resolution by the U.N. Security Council in New York.
Britain circulated a draft on Wednesday, backed by the United States, France and Germany, that would make compliance with a transition plan drafted by international envoy Kofi Annan enforceable under Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter.
This would allow the council to authorize actions ranging from diplomatic and economic sanctions to military intervention.
But as Council members began negotiations on a resolution to renew the U.N. Syria monitoring mission, Russia's Deputy U.N. Ambassador Alexander Pankin made clear Moscow would use its veto if it had to.
"We are definitely against Chapter 7," he told reporters. "Anything can be negotiated, but we do not negotiate this, this is a red line."
Annan himself asked the 15-member council to agree on "clear consequences" if the Syrian government or opposition failed to comply with his plan, which has produced neither a ceasefire nor political dialogue since it was agreed in April.
The British draft threatens the Syrian government with sanctions if it does not stop using heavy weapons and withdraw its troops from towns and cities within 10 days.
OLIVE GROVES
While the insurgents cannot match the Syrian army's firepower, they have managed to establish footholds in towns, cities and villages across Syria, often prompting Assad's forces to respond with helicopter gunships and artillery.
On Thursday, residents reported the first bombardment of the capital as security forces used mortars, then tanks and infantry to try to flush rebels near Kfar Souseh, a southern suburb.
The al-Lawan and Basateen districts of Kfar Souseh are a semi-residential area of olive and fruit groves lying astride an interchange on the capital's Hafez al-Assad southern bypass.
Activists said tanks had fired from the Hadi Mosque to the east and al-Mazzeh military airport immediately to the west.
"I woke up this morning and saw helicopters flying over the area. Then I started hearing the mortars. There were about six or seven of them in the past half hour," said anti-government activist Hazem al-Aqad. "People are terrified, families are getting in their cars and rushing away as fast as they can."
The official news agency SANA said Syrian forces killed rebels shipping arms in two boats on Lake Qotaina, near Homs.
Assad's opponents say 13,000 armed and unarmed opponents of Assad, and 4,300 members of security forces loyal to Damascus, have been killed since the uprising began 16 months ago.
The activist Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 42 people had been killed so far on Thursday, 30 of them civilians.
Brigadier Tlas, socialite son of a veteran former defense minister, has made no public comment since fleeing, but France said on Thursday he was in contact with Syrian rebels.
"I know the opposition and this general have approached each other ... contact has been made," said Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius. But he said he could not confirm Tlas was in Paris.
Fares by contrast immediately went public, posting a video statement on Facebook on Wednesday that repeatedly said government forces had been killing civilians.
"DEFEND THE COUNTRY"
"I declare that I have joined, from this moment, the ranks of the revolution of the Syrian people," he said.
"I ask ... the members of the military to join the revolution and to defend the country and the citizens. Turn your guns on the criminals from this regime ...
"Every Syrian man has to join the revolution to remove this nightmare and this gang," he said, accusing the Assad family and its allies of corruption and "destroying society" for 40 years.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari said Fares was now in Qatar, one of the Gulf states overtly supporting the rebels and calling for Assad to go.
"He is a man of strong military and security background," Zebari told reporters in Paris. "We were surprised by his defection because he was a loyal member of the regime."
Assad's crackdown on what began as a broad, peaceful pro-democracy movement helped turn it into an armed rebellion, but the insurgents know they must erode the loyalty and conviction of his establishment to loosen its hold on power.
In Damascus, a terse government statement said: "The Syrian Foreign Ministry declares that Nawaf al-Fares has been relieved of his duties and he no longer has any link to our embassy in Baghdad or the foreign ministry. They embassy in Iraq will continue carrying out its normal duties."
Russia and China, both veto-wielding permanent members of the U.N. Security , have for months blocked attempts to increase the pressure on Assad, endorsing his argument that he is defending his country against armed groups bent on toppling him with the backing of the West and Sunni Arab Gulf monarchies.
Most of Assad's political and military establishment are members of the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam. The revolt and the fighters behind it are mostly Sunni Muslims, as are Tlas and Fares.
Their defections may indicate a growing alienation among the Sunni business elite, which had been slow to embrace a revolt that began among poorer parts of the majority community.

This press release is available in German.
It is not primary tumors that are responsible for the majority of cancer deaths, but rather their metastases. Physiologists and neuropathologists from the University of Zurich have now identified the origin of metastasis formation, thereby becoming the first to reveal the pathway of metastasizing intestinal cancer cells out of the blood stream. The results allow new approaches in the development of cancer therapies.
Every year, over seven million people die of cancer worldwide. Thanks to more effective therapy and better early detection, primary tumors are only responsible for ten percent of cancer deaths in industrial nations. Nowadays, the vast majority die from the consequences of metastasis, namely secondary tumors. These develop from metastases of the primary tumor by spreading via the patient's bloodstream. Until now, the actual reason for the metastatic spread in certain organs was unknown, it being unclear as to how the secondary cells were able to enter the tissue of other organs from the bloodstream.
Now, a European team headed by physiologists and neuropathologists from the University of Zurich have identified the mechanism that helps metastasizing intestinal cancer cells to infiltrate the organs from the blood vessels. Lubor Borsig and Mathias Heikenwalder's team demonstrate that cancer cells manipulate specific "doorman receptors" on the endothelium of the blood vessels.
Tumor cells manipulate blood-vessel doorman
Chemokines (intercellular messengers) play a key role in the immune system: They can summon white blood cells directly for immune defense. Tumor cells are also capable of producing chemokines and mobilizing the body's own special immune cells, monocytes. Consequently, elevated levels of the tumor's own chemokine CCL2 are characteristic of metastasizing breast, prostate and bowel cancer. Until now, high CCL2 values were primarily taken as an indication of strong tumor growth and a poor prognosis for the disease. Based on in-vivo and in-vitro experiments on lab mice, Borsig and Heikenwlder show that CCL2 is far more than an indicator of the cancer's aggressiveness. "CCL2 activates a doorman receptor and enables cancer cell to leave the blood circulation and metastasize in other organs," explains Borsig. The role of the doorman detected on the endothelium for the first time and referred to as CCR2 in a healthy organism is not known. Borsig suspects that the doorman modulates the permeability of the blood vessels during the body's immune response.
New approach for drug development
"The mechanism discovered will yield a completely new approach for the development of drugs to combat metastasis in breast, prostate and bowel cancer," Borsig is convinced. Suppressing the tumor's chemokine expression or blocking the doorman for the tumor chemokine to inhibit any more cancer cells from entering healthy tissue from the bloodstream is conceivable. "If we can succeed in preventing the cancer cells from leaving the bloodstream, the metastasis can be fought directly at the source," concludes Borsig.

TOTORABAMBA, Peru ? Smoke swirls around the hearth and hangs in the sunny doorway of the adobe kitchen where Espirita Lima Bautista crouches by an open fire, toasting barley grains. Soot dangles from the thatch roof in six-inch stalactites, a grim reminder of the particles she inhales whenever she cooks.
For this 80-year-old grandmother, breathing while cooking for an hour is like inhaling the second-hand soot from 400 cigarettes. Although it only lasts as long as the meal is being prepared, exposure began when she was a baby, slung in a blanket over her mother?s back.
Two decades ago, concerns about cooking fires centered on deforestation from firewood. Now research shows that cookstoves can kill people, too.
Indoor smoke from coal, wood or dung ? used as cooking fuel by more than 3 billion people worldwide ? ranks ahead of unsafe water as a cause of death in low- and middle-income countries. Almost 2 million deaths a year are caused by cooking smoke, which is linked to pneumonia in children, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, low birth weight babies and lung cancer, according to the World Health Organization.
These fires also help heat up the planet, emitting greenhouse gases as well as the black carbon that creates the stalactites on Lima Bautista?s ceiling
?There are health and climate co-benefits to changing the way a lot of people in rural areas around the world cook,? said Jennifer Burney, a postdoctoral fellow at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego who studies the links between energy and food in poor countries.
Faced with global public health threats, governments and non-profit development organizations are encouraging families to install ?improved? stoves. The United States has donated $105 million to a United Nations-led effort that aims to put safer cookstoves in 100 million households by 2020. In addition, leaders of the G8 countries pledged in May to take measures to reduce short-lived climate pollutants that include distributing more efficient cookstoves in developing countries.
The problem is that many newer models on the market do little to reduce harmful emissions and some actually make matters worse.
?It?s a case of the policy getting ahead of the science,? said William Checkley, a researcher from Johns Hopkins University?s Bloomberg School of Public Health, who is coordinating two studies in Peru, including a comparative study of cookstoves in Lima Bautista?s village near the Andean city of Ayacucho.
Research published in March points to huge differences between stove models. Black-carbon emissions from some newer stoves were higher than from traditional fire hearths, said Burney, who co-authored the study.
Cookstove research was originally designed to reduce deforestation, said Tami Bond, an engineering professor at the University of Illinois. Now, she said, ?health is really the driver? of clean-stove research.
Indoor smoke mainly affects women, children, the elderly and indigenous people, who have the least political and economic clout, and the least access to safe water, sewer systems and health care, said Agnes Soares, environmental epidemiology adviser at the Pan American Health Organization in Washington, D.C.
For many diseases, indoor cooking fires rank between active and passive cigarette smoking as a risk factor, according to Kirk Smith, director of the Global Health and Environment Program at the University of California, Berkeley.
?Globally, the World Health Organization attributes 35 percent of chronic obstructive pulmonary deaths and 21 percent of lower respiratory infection deaths to indoor air pollution from solid fuel.? In China, where coal is the main fuel, they are the second-highest factor linked to lung cancer, after smoking. Women who cook indoors over open fires also have thicker carotid artery walls and more arterial plaque buildup than urban counterparts who use liquefied petroleum gas stoves, according to Checkley?s preliminary data. Both are signs of heart disease.
