Russia's Putin: I'll sign law banning US adoptions

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced he intends to sign into law a ban on Americans adopting children from Russia.?Many Americans, and many Russians, see the proposed ban as a political manuever that comes at the expense of children. Channel Four's Jane Deith reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled on Thursday that he would sign a controversial bill banning Americans from adopting Russian children, a defiant move against the United States that has angered some who argue that it victimizes children to make a political point.

The law could block dozens of Russian children expected to be adopted by American families from leaving the country and cut off one of the main international routes for Russian children to leave orphanages that are often dismal. Russia is the single biggest source of adopted children in the United States, with more than 60,000 Russian children being taken in by Americans over the past two decades.

The bill is retaliation for an American law that calls for sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators and part of an increasingly confrontational stance by the Kremlin against the West.

Related: Americans may lose right to adopt Russian children

Putin said U.S. authorities routinely let Americans suspected of violence toward Russian adoptees go unpunished ? a clear reference to Dima Yakovlev, a Russian toddler for whom the bill is named. The child was adopted by Americans and then died in 2008 after his father left him in a car in broiling heat for hours. The father was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Putin indicated that he would endorse the measure.

"I still don't see any reasons why I should not sign it," he told a televised meeting, The Associated Press reported. He went on to say that he "intends" to sign it.

Children's rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov on Wednesday said that 46 children who were about to be adopted in the United States would remain in Russia in case the bill comes into effect. On Thursday, he petitioned the president to extend the ban to other countries.

Would-be adoptive parents in the United States are left hanging by Putin's position on the bill, which was passed by Russian lawmakers last week.

Among them are John and Renee Thomas of Minnetonka, Minn., Kari Huus of NBC News reported.?The Thomases have already adopted Jack, 7, from Russia. When they found out he had a little brother, they began the process to try to adopt him, too. The wait has stretched to four years, and now the adoption may be in danger.?

"When Jack is asked about his family, he talks about his brother," John Thomas said. "He always asks, 'When is he coming home?' We just tell him we?re waiting for the call."

UNICEF estimates that there are about 740,000 children without parental custody in Russia, while only 18,000 Russians are now waiting to adopt a child.

Russian President Vladamir Putin has said he'll sign a proposed law that would halt adoptions of Russian children to Americans. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

The U.S. State Department again registered its opposition to the Russian legislation.

"The welfare of children is simply too important to tie to the political aspects of our relationship," State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said Thursday. "Additionally, we are deeply troubled by the provisions in the bill that would restrict the ability of Russian civil society organizations to work with American partners." ?

Critics of the bill have left dozens of stuffed toys and candles outside the parliament's lower and upper houses to express solidarity with Russian orphans.?

An on-line petition urging the Kremlin to scrap the bill had garnered more than 100,000 Russian signatures by Tuesday.?

Neighbor took six survivors into his home

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? Gene Rosen had just finished feeding his cats and was heading from his home near Sandy Hook Elementary school to a diner Friday morning when he saw six small children sitting in a neat semicircle at the end of his driveway.

A school bus driver was standing over them, telling them things would be all right. It was about 9:30 a.m., and the children, he discovered, had just run from the school to escape a gunman.

"We can't go back to school," one little boy told Rosen. "Our teacher is dead. Mrs. Soto; we don't have a teacher."

Rosen, a 69-year-old retired psychologist, took the four girls and two boys into his home, and over the next few hours gave them toys, listened to their stories and called their frantic parents.

Rosen said he had heard the staccato sound of gunfire about 15 minutes earlier but had dismissed it as an obnoxious hunter in the nearby woods.

"I had no idea what had happened," Rosen said. "I couldn't take that in."

He walked the children past his small goldfish pond with its running waterfall, and the garden he made with his two grandchildren, into the small yellow house he shares with his wife.

He ran upstairs and grabbed an armful of stuffed animals. He gave those to the children, along with some fruit juice, and sat with them as the two boys described seeing their teacher being shot.

Victoria Soto, 27, was a first-grade teacher killed when 20-year-old Adam Lanza burst into her classroom. It wasn't clear how the children escaped harm, but there have been reports that Soto hid some of her students from the approaching gunman. The six who turned up at Rosen's home did apparently have to run past her body to safety.

"They said he had a big gun and a little gun," said Rosen, who didn't want to discuss other details the children shared.

Rosen called the children's parents, using cellphone numbers obtained from the school bus company, and they came and retrieved their children.

One little girl, he said, spent the entire ordeal clutching a small stuffed Dalmatian to her chest and staring out the window looking for her mommy.

And one little boy brought them all a moment of levity.

"This little boy turns around, and composes himself, and he looks at me like he had just removed himself from the carnage and he says, 'Just saying, your house is very small,'" Rosen said. "I wanted to tell him, 'I love you. I love you.'"

Rosen said Sandy Hook had always been a place of joy for him. He taught his 8-year-old grandson to ride his bike in the school parking lot and took his 4-year-old granddaughter to use the swings.

"I thought today how life has changed, how that ground has been marred, how that school has been desecrated," he said.

He said it wasn't his training as a psychologist that helped him that day ? it was being a grandparent.

A couple of hours after the last child left, a knock came on his door. It was a frantic mother who had heard that some children had taken refuge there. She was looking for her little boy.

"Her face looked frozen in terror," Rosen said, breaking down in tears.

"She thought maybe a miracle from God would have the child at my house," he said. Later, "I looked at the casualty list ... and his name was on it."

We're all living longer, but longevity increases not benefitting everybody

Monday, December 17, 2012

Global lifespans have risen dramatically in the past 40 years, but the increased life expectancy is not benefitting everybody equally, say University of Toronto researchers. In particular, adult males from low- and middle-income countries are losing ground.

People are living longer on average than they were in 1970, and those extra years of life are being achieved at lower cost, the researchers, led by U of T Chemical Engineering PhD candidate Ryan Hum, say in a paper published in the open access science journal eLife this month.

However, the costs for an extra year of life among adult males in lower-income countries are rising, Hum and his colleagues say, while the costs for an extra year of life among children worldwide and for adults in high-income countries continues to drop.

Hum, who is also a member of U of T's Centre for Global Engineering, co-wrote the paper with Professors Yu-Ling Cheng, director of the Centre, Prabhat Jha of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and Anita McGahan of the Rotman School of Management.

The researchers made the discovery when they took the Michaelis-Menten (MM) equation ? a well-known mathematical model first used to analyze enzyme kinetics in 1913 ? and applied it to adult and child mortality at different incomes. They reasoned that just as chemical catalysts affect enzyme velocity; the public health catalysts react with income to affect life expectancy.

"We noticed the similarity in the curvature and became fascinated with the beauty of the analogy," said Hum. The MM equation is standard curriculum for biochemistry, biology and most chemical engineering undergraduate students and we knew there could be added knowledge that we could decipher purely from the math."

"Over the past few decades, research and development of new technologies (drugs, vaccines, policies) have focused mostly on childhood and infectious disease, with fewer worldwide investments for adult chronic diseases," the U of T researchers suggest. "Increasing coverage of inexpensive health interventions such as immunization, insecticide-treated nets, and case management of childhood infections could be contributing to decline in critical income for child survival."

Hum and his colleagues conclude by recommending that society invest in research and treatment of adult chronic disease, most notably the control of smoking and other risk factors for chronic diseases, and low-cost, widely useful treatments for these diseases.

In the paper, "Global divergence in critical income for adult and childhood survival: analyses of mortality using Michaelis-Menten", the authors expand on the analogy between enzymes and incomes: "Income directly enables certain technologies, immunization programs, epidemiological knowledge, education, and sanitation systems and other areas, which may themselves be interpreted as 'catalysts' ? agents that accelerate the rate of a reaction without being fully consumed in the process," they write.

They came up with a new parameter, critical income, which they define as the level of income needed to achieve half of the maximal overall life expectancy found in high-income countries. For example, in 1970, the critical income for overall life expectancy (in inflation adjusted 2005 dollars) was $1.48 per day. By the year 2007, the critical income had fallen to $1.21 per day. In other words, a lower national income is needed to achieve a higher life expectancy now, compared to 40 years ago.

However, that good news is due mostly to improvements in children's health and to increased life expectancy in high-income countries, the researchers say. For adults (aged 15 to 59) in lower-income countries, critical income has actually risen since 1970. In other words, adults in low- and middle-income countries need to have higher incomes on average in order to add an extra year of life. Adult males in these countries are especially affected, though adult females also suffer.

"Under the current conditions, an approximate national income per capita of $2.20 per day would be required in 2007 to attain the same achievable adult male survival rate with $1.25 per day in 1970. Moreover, should the critical income costs for adults continue to rise (in line with current trends)," they warn.

Hum and his colleagues noted that increases in smoking, especially among adult males, and HIV prevalence are responsible for part of the life expectancy gap. By contrast, worldwide attention to childhood health including much research on new technologies, vaccines and political attention mean a rosier future for children ? it's becoming less expensive to give children the chance for longer lives.

How to use iTunes 11's new features (and?restore?the old look)

55 min.

Apple released its newest version of iTunes, and it's a complete overhaul to the entire program. As you'd?expect, that means there are a few cool (somewhat) hidden features. Here are some we've found especially helpful.

With any new iteration of software you're bound to have a bit of a learning curve as you get used to it.?iTunes? 11?is no different, and the first thing you're greeted to when you launch it is a completely different main screen. The big news with iTunes 11 is the new interface, but hidden beneath that is some pretty cool functionality you might not notice at first glance.

Yes, you can get the old iTunes look back (sidebar and all)
Let's start with what we're guessing is most people's main gripe: it looks different. It's true, it does, and if you're not a fan of browsing your music library with giant covers, and navigating drop-down menus, iTunes 11 is a bit annoying. The good news? You can get the old look back:

  • Get the sidebar back by clicking View > Show Sidebar (or hitting Alt+Cmd+S).
  • Get the status bar back by clicking View > Show Status Bar (or hit Command+/).
  • Click Songs in the top bar, and sort by Artist for the traditional list view.

Now, iTunes 11 should look about the same as iTunes 10.

Scan iTunes gift cards with your camera
Entering?in the code from a gift?certificate is always a bit annoying. With iTunes 11, all you need is a camera:

  • Head into the iTunes Store, and Click "Redeem" at the bottom of the screen under the "Manage" list (or?click this link)
  • Click "Use Camera"
  • Hold your gift card up to the camera and wait for it to register.

That's it! No more fumbling around typing a random string of letters and numbers together.

Expanded view replaces cover flow
Cover Flow is gone in iTunes 11 and it's replaced with the new "Expanded View." When you're viewing your library by Albums, simply select an album, and you get an expanded view right there with all the album info. It works a lot better than Cover Flow and makes it so you can quickly view album info without leaving the place you're at. You can either click the album art again, or the "X" in the right corner to make it go away.

Also, a fun fact: Expanded View uses the album artwork as a background for the view (see image at right), so it creates a different background for each album. You can disable this if you want under iTunes > Preferences > General Preferences. Just uncheck the "Use custom colors for open albums, movies, etc" box.

The 'up next' feature is actually awesome?
Ever have those moments where you're listening to a song and it reminds you of another song? You don't want to stop the song playing, but you do want to cue up the song you're thinking of. That's what "Up Next" lets you do. Instead of creating playlists for everything, you can create on-the-fly playlists of songs or albums.

You can do this from anywhere. Just right-click an album, artist, or song, click "Add to Up Next" and it's added to the queue. You can also click "Play Next" instead to add it to the top of the queue. To see what's in your queue, click the list button in the middle of iTunes, and to view the previously played tracks, click the little clock icon. "Up Next" replaces iTunes DJ/Party Shuffle, so if you're looking for those, you won't find them.

Your place is now saved across devices?
If you use a bunch of Apple products, say, an iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, one of the best new features in iTunes 11 is that it saves your progress in your media across all devices through iCloud. So, if you pause a movie, TV show, podcast, audiobook, or iTunes U file on your desktop, you can pick up right where you left off on another device.?

MiniPlayer is more functional
In older versions of iTunes, the MiniPlayer didn't do much except allow you to pause or skip tracks. Now, MiniPlayer allows you to search for new tracks, add new songs to the "Up Next" queue, and even control AirPlay volume.

To enable MiniPlayer, just click the window icon in the top right corner and iTunes will shrink down. When you mouse over the window, you can control playback or search for new tracks. Otherwise, it displays the currently playing track.

Preview history tracks what you listen to in the store?
The iTunes Store now tracks everything you listen to in its preview history panel. When you're in the store, click the list icon in the top right corner, and you're shown all the stuff you listened to recently. You can hit "Clear" to get rid of everything in the list Also worth noting is that provided you're signed in with iCloud, your previewed tracks on all your devices will sync here. So, if you preview a song on your iPhone, it will show in your preview history in iTunes.?

Search is now universal?
This isn't the most earth-shattering of news, but in iTunes 11 you have two main search areas: the store and your library. That's it. In previous versions you had to search separately for video, music, or podcasts. Now, it searches your entire local library, or the iTunes store for everything.

Also nice is the instant search results you get. Start typing a search, and iTunes starts delivering you results. Select what you want, and you're taken there directly. It's simple, but it works really well.

Apps get a list view for easy trimming
One of the most annoying things to do in older versions of iTunes was trimming down the apps downloaded on your computer. You had to do it in the Apps panel with large icons that seemed to take forever to load. Now you can do it with in a List View, and it supports the same basic sort options you get with music (Date Added, Purchase Date, Size, etc).

All you need to do is select the Apps tab, then click "List." This should come in really handy when you're cleaning out old apps you don't use anymore. Reader?shafnitz points out?this view has been around a little while, but if nothing else it's more prevalent now.

I just wondered what everyone was like in real life! You dont have to put anything about yourself if your dont wish too :3

My name is Amy, I am 14 years old. Female, just if you weren?t clever enough to work out by my name. My hair reaches my shoulders and is dyed red, I have teal iris's and sadly wear a pair of square framed black glasses. I'm small and thinish with tanned skin, often wearing black, but I wouldn?t class myself as emo or anything. I'm just a individual.

My personality is kind of split. So spilt in fact I think I have bipolar or cross boarder personality. One side of me is sweet, well mannered, manically giddy and pleasantly caring. The other side is cold, smug, sarcastic, and very angry. Sometimes I just flip out, sometimes becoming a little violent. Afterwards I fall into a depression. It?s kind of weird.

It hurts not knowing who you are...

I enjoy gaming! Which I guess is odd for a girl. I love Resident evil, Final Fantasy, and Zelda. Other things I enjoy are: Reading, writing, horror films, anime, manga, online comics, youtubers, (Pewdiepie<3) drawing, becoming obsessed with things, getting scared, daydreaming, and just being a reject of society.

Healthy Diet Tips For Children ? Best Diet For Children

VN:F [1.9.20_1166]

Rating: 5.0/5 (1 vote cast)

Best Diet For ChildrenParents need to include the right kinds of foods in their children?s diet as they are growing. They often require greater amounts of certain essential vitamins and minerals, lack of which results in nutritional deficiencies. Nutritional deficiencies often cause severe deformities and diseases in young children. Depending on the child?s activity, he/she might need to modify their caloric intake. Given below is an effective diet plan for children.

Diet Tips For Children

Protein Intake

Protein is extremely important for young children as it aids in muscle growth. However, it is important that children should consume only lean protein sources, as excess saturated fats lead to unwanted fat gain. Lean protein foods include chicken, tuna, salmon, beans, skim milk and cheese. It is advisable that you should add certain spices to increase its flavour and make it appetizing for your child. Children should consume one gram of protein per kilogram of bodyweight.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are very important for children as they provide energy. However, it is important to give your children the right kind of this nutrient. Restrict the amount of refined sugars and increase the quantity of complex carbohydrates in your diet. Refined carbohydrates are often the cause of hyperactivity in children, due to the fact that they are digested very quickly by the body.

foods for children

As they digest very quickly, they often lead to excess weight gain. However, complex carbohydrates are digested very slowly and are burnt up throughout the day. Foods that are rich in complex carbohydrates include oats, bran, wheat, legumes, fruits, vegetables and barley. You should aim at including these foods at each of your meals.

Fat Intake

Saturated fats should be avoided completely as they increase the risk of suffering from heart disease and cause weight gain; however, good fats are beneficial in preventing heart disease as well as promoting fat loss. Good fats are present in several foods and they include fish, almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds, pecans and flaxseed. You should try including around 20-25 grams of good fats in your child?s diet.

Vitamins and Minerals

Apart from proteins, carbohydrates and fats, children also require high amounts of vitamins and minerals. Minerals such as calcium are extremely important as they aid in growth and strengthen bones. Children also need vitamins such as vitamin A, C and E as they play a crucial role in boosting the immune system as well as executing several other bodily processes.

healthy diet for children

Foods that contain high amounts of vitamins include green leafy vegetables, oranges, strawberries, apples, grapefruit, pineapple, kiwifruit and mango. Beef, fish, legumes and dairy products are excellent sources of minerals that are required by the body and must be a part of every child?s diet.

Total Caloric Intake

While it is important to include the right kind of foods in your diet, it is also important that you include them in the right amounts. Excess calories are converted into fat, regardless of their source. The total number of calories for children is dependent upon the child?s lifestyle as well as age. Children can consume anywhere between 1200-2000 calories per day, depending upon their age.

Tribal chief suspected of al Qaeda link triggers Yemen standoff

ADEN (Reuters) - A tribal leader suspected of links to al Qaeda's active Yemeni wing returned to his home in southern Yemen on Monday, triggering an armed standoff between his supporters and militiamen allied to the government, tribal sources said.

Tarek al-Fadli, who was raised in Saudi Arabia and fought in Afghanistan, leads a major tribe in the restive Abyan province and had taken refuge in the mountains over the summer after a U.S. military-backed onslaught drove militants linked to al Qaeda from southern towns.

The standoff highlights the challenges facing President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi in trying to assert state authority following last year's uprising in Yemen, which adjoins the world's top oil exporter, Saudi Arabia.

After president Ali Abdullah Saleh finally bowed to popular revolt and stepped down in February, the U.S.-backed Yemeni military swept into the south and wrested back a number of towns from al Qaeda-linked militants, sometimes after heavy fighting.

"The return of Fadli to his house triggered protests from those allied to the army who surrounded his house and asked him to go back where he came from," a source allied to the government told Reuters.

Protesters asked the government to intervene to get him out of the town, the source said, adding that a security committee would meet on Tuesday to discuss the matter.

A source close to Fadli told Reuters that he was at his home in Zinjibar and that no one had the right to force him out.

The U.S. military has intensified a campaign of missile strikes on suspected Islamist militants in recent months, often using pilotless drones.

Yemen's wealthier Gulf neighbors and Washington are concerned that al Qaeda and other Islamist fighters operating there could pose a threat to Saudi Arabia and to nearby oil shipping channels.

Hadi, praised by the U.S. ambassador in Sanaa as being more effective against al Qaeda than his predecessor, was quoted as saying during a trip to the United States in September that he personally approved every attack.

While Washington usually avoids comment on the strikes in Yemen, the British-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism, which tracks U.S. operations, says as many as 56 civilians have been killed this year by drones.

5 Fitness Mistakes to Avoid | Traci D. Mitchell

We all make mistakes when it comes to managing our fitness. Push too hard, go too easy, lift the wrong weights, don?t do any sort of resistance training, and the list goes on and on. But here are five mistakes that we can all avoid ? and be better off for it!

1) Wearing the wrong shoes for working out.
I like to wear shoes that look good, but when it comes to fitness, function has to take top billing over fashion. Fortunately most brands have cute athletic shoes for all types of fitness enthusiasts. If you?re a Zumba fan, there are shoes just for Zumba that will help your feet slide better (avoiding painful ankle rolls). If you?re a runner, ?it?s a good idea to wear running shoes (or at least a good pair of cross-training shoes). More often than not, if you?re working out, your feet will swell a little bit.?If you normally wear a size eight, nudge up your shoe by a half size to give your feet some room. Your toes should not be all the way to the front of the shoe. Your pigs need some love, too.

2) Water-less workouts.
After ten or 15 minutes of working out, you body will likely need some H2O. Aim to finish an entire water bottle by the time you?re done with your workout. You may not feel thirsty, but your body will appreciate the hydration ? particularly through the winter months when the humidity drops and dry air increases. A little extra water will not only help keep you energized, but will also help maintain a normal appetite.

3)?Justifying a snack attack because you worked out for 45 minutes.
A 45-minute workout is great ? truly! But 45 minutes of a good workout (or a workout of any length for that matter) doesn?t justify a snack attack that will add calories back onto your waistline much faster than it could ever take to shake them off again. If you didn?t eat before your workout, or if you worked out for a particularly long time (90+ minutes), you could certainly stand to eat something (with a good balance of protein and carbs),?but an order of fries or sugary coffee drink still gets a red card! You worked too hard to set your body back. Some perspective: the average 45 minute continuous moderate-pace workout *might* burn about 400 calories. That?s about the same amount of calories in a pumpkin spice latte!

4)?Going from 0 to 60 in no time flat!
How many times have you started a workout without any sort of warm up? Hopefully not very often, but I see it in others all the time. People walk into the gym, make a B-line to the treadmill and start running at full pace within a minute. ?We can only get away with staying injury-free for so long. Injuries aren?t just sprained ankles and torn ACLs. Injuries can be seemingly mild, but chronic, including back pain, deep muscle pain or various forms of tendonitis. Warming up for five or ten minutes by loosening up your joints and muscles can make a big difference in your long term health and fitness.

5)?Losing steam ten minutes into your workout.
The buzz kill of all buzz kills is psyching up for a great workout, making it to the gym, then losing your momentum a few minutes after you start working out, and long before even a bead of sweat has formed. Two words: MENTAL TOUGHNESS. ?We all have bad days and want to throw in the towel on a workout. But if you?ve made it to the gym but don?t really feel like doing much, shift gears. Go do something completely different. Instead of doing the same-old same-old on a piece of cardio,?take a class. Instead of lifting weights first, take 15 minutes to stretch or even loosen up on a foam roller. You?ll feel great after you?ve done something, so don?t stop after the first few minutes of sluggishness.
